I just did this in September see link to my post on it, (http://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=889757).

Bottom line is it takes some effort (twist and pull) but they will come off. There are no retaining screws or bolts, they are held on by a 3 friction clips. I took mine to a local powder coating shop (less than a week and about $100).

I have a super old wash mitt that I use to clean the exhaust tips with every time I wash, every few washes I spray them with some chrome wheel cleaner and let soak while I wash the wheels.... If you never clean them then its a PITA to get the burnt crap off.

Though black tips might stealth on a black car or good on a dark blue.

Chrome exhaust tips and kidneys are the only acceptable chrome on a BMW IMHO... unlike American cars, my buddy loves the millions of chrome accents on his Cadillacs...

I took a piece of a 1x2 and a dead blow hammer and tapped from the back of the tips and took them off...watch when you put them back on and get the taper of the tips lined up to the exhaust pipes.
