I wasn't aware that the GYs were the only RFTs in 19". That sucks. As far as whats better in non RFTs, I'd check out the tirerack reviews for all the tires that fit your car. I usually do that when looking at new tires and it has worked out well for me.

Potenza RE960AS Pole Position RFT Size: 245/45RF19 Run Flat I have these as well, but 18" version. Fantastic tires so far (replaced super noisy Pirelli's). Dave

Whether road hazard warranty exists is (in the GY case) dependent on when the tires were purchased, or the vehicle if it came with GY. Some manufacturers that did provide road hazard coverage no longer do, even for the same model/size tire. The TireRack site had shown (have not checked recently) both the old and new warranties for the GY LS2's.

The bridgestone Potenza RE960AS looks like a good alternative for the GY Eagle LS2 and at a much lower price too. The major difference is that they are W rated and they are consider Ultra High Performance All-Season Tires. Which usually mean they are not that good in the snow and they will wear out faster, not that GY Eagle LS2 is any good in the snow or have a long thread life.

Well, my wife's lexus has these in the 18" version as does my X3. I've only had mine on for roughly 7,000kms (w/o issue to date) but in her case, she's had them nearly 20,000kms. As far as I'm concerned, the tread wear/noise has been great so far and with respect to faster wear on these, I don't see it. After 20,000kms, the "rib" embedded within the tread is barely visible, so I'm expecting roughly 45k or 50k kms out of these tires. I only got about 38k or 40k on the Pirelli's before they started to get horrendously loud....can't speak to the GY Eagles though...never owned a set.
Dave p.s. as for winter driving, they've been great so far (I don't have winter tires). I live in Toronto and typically get 2 to 3 feet of snow from December to March. I also drive the X3 to the cottage during the winter, and up there, they get in excess of 4 feet and the handling has been great. Not got stuck yet!!!

We replaced my wifes GYs about a month ago with the Potenzas. They are a really nice tire and relatively cheap. Bought from tirerack and local dealer installed and balanced them for $125.
Dry and wet handling is about the same. Since it's not my daily driver it's hard for me to give an expert analysis but all in all I'd say it is a legit replacement for the GYs. Haven't had them in the snow yet but I'm sure they'll hold their own. I drove the GYs in heavy snow a couple times and wasn't all that impressed. I felt they weren't as good as say the Continental DWS tires we recently had experience with. |
