Pedal feel of 28i engine in X3 vs 128i

I recently picked up a 128i 'vert, and comparing that with my X3 2.8i, the pedal feel is very different; the much discussed lag that is present in the X3 is not evident in the 128i.
Is this due to the drive by wire feature of the X3?

I'm not sure you can buy a car made in the past 15 years that isn't drive by wire.

It's all in the programming.

OK I didn't know if the 128 was or not. Then if they both are DBW, BMW needs to come out with a programming fix for the X3 because that lag is very annoying!!

I think they might have... I drove a 2012 X3 35i recently (I believe it was built in the new year) and it had no lag in the throttle. It behaved quite nicely in terms of the throttle even when I tried to "feather" the throttle in the same way that caused lag in a 2012 X1 that I drove.

Maybe its solved?

If that's true, do you think they will have some sort of recall for '11 X3's to update the software?

I haven't heard of any kind of recall for the throttle issue. I picked up my 2012 Oct 31st and I have never noticed the lag issue everyone talks about.

Mine was built in Jan and it definitely has it - though my wife has no idea what I'm talking about.

IF there is a fix, I wouldn't expect a recall. It'll just be a running software update that would get done during a service visit.

Some people seem to notice more than others, especially if the x3 isn't your daily driver.

Does your 128i has 8-spd auto as X3? The lag is caused by the shifter not the DBW, if you are in "D" the vehicle starts moving in 2nd gear to save fuel by keeping the RPM low. If you put the shifter to "DS" then you won't see the lag as the gear will be in 1st with bit more revs kick-in while pressing the gas pedal.

This is one of the mpg tactics BMW put in...also it helps from rear-ending a slow moving vehicle before you in a stop light.

The 128 is not the 8 speed. That's the first time I've heard of this explanation, and it's interesting. I'm guessing there is no way to get around this other than driving around in sport all the time?

Doesn't have to be sport mode always, I did had this issue but after few hundred miles the vehicle adapts to your throttle input and you won't notice the lag.
