So i purchased the gloss black roof rails, service center quoted me about $700 for install lol. According to their tech its 5hr labor install @ $140.
On getbmwparts.com it says 1.5hr installation |

does it look too difficult to do it yourself? can you share link to the ones you bought? I've been thinking of doing this myself since I didn't want the aluminum ones that were available when ordering the car.

When I ordered my X3, I didn't specify the $250 roof rails. The salesman warned me that it would cost $2500 to add them later. I ordered the roof rails.

ugh, I wouldn't have expected to do any work underneath to get them in.
thanks for the link. I would have been happy to pay $250 to add them to my order, but they didn't give the black option and I didn't want any chrome / silver / etc on the car. |

This thread makes you realise how fashions have changed.
In the past you would pay £££ to upgrade from a base rep mobile White car with black trim, to a 'colour' car with silver/chrome trim. This world has turned on it's head :-) Enjoy your X3 |

Did you watch them change them? I have silver on my black X3 and would like to change to the black ones. Wondered what the procedure was? I have the black grills and they look nice.

You can order the black ones and get them swap by respectable body shop. The headliner has to be drop to unscrew the hex nuts.

As some have said above, retrofitting is much more expensive because of the headliner and the airbag systems. But buy your own parts online! I tried a reputable independent in Maine (he works mostly on older German cars) who said he apologized because he didn't have the software and equipment to handle the installation. I went to several local dealers in upstate NY and got wildly varying prices ($450-800). Needless to say, I went with the $450 quote; the service manager told me his technicians had underestimated the time involved -- took him/them 5 hours -- but they would chalk it up to experience. So, by buying my (black) rails online and scouting locally for best installation price, I ended up saving hundreds....on a retrofit, however. Finding the right car with the rails already installed would have been smarter.
