Question about the comfort access sensor for the hatch
So, my 6-day-old car's hatch is supposed to open when I swing my foot under it.
However, I've never been able to make it work. When the "delivery specialist" was demonstrating the car to me, she couldn't make it work, either. I looked under the car where the sensor should be and all I see is an empty hole!!! Is there supposed to be a sensor there? I.e. something that looks like the parking sensor? or is there something inside that hole? According to the manual there should be two sensors, but I see none. Did they omit this entire feature from my car?? The rest of the comfort access system works as intended. Just wanted to find out if I'm missing something before I go see the service department for the first time |

The sensor is actually a long tubular type sensor, not like the PDC sensors
No 3 in the picture below.

The only BMW that I've had with the foot sensor and actually tried this on was an M5. The foot action was a straight in-out kick in the center of the rear bumper. Nothing fancy, no waving back and forth, just a one-time straight in-out, dead center below the BMW logo. Give that a try.

Please post a video of you attempting to open the hatch using the toe kick sensor.
This topic shows the two toe kick sensor rods on my vehicle. On my vehicle it is easy to perform a visual inspection of the toe kick sensor rods by removing the ten screws retaining the gravel guard, then removing the gravel guard. |

I had a similar issue with my 2015. I found the error in my case was completely operator error. After waving my foot under the bumper I basically stood there. It has since been pointed out to me that you need to step back after waving your foot under the bumper.
Sometimes our cars are smarter than we are - I was told its a safety feature where the rear hatch won't open if using this feature and it detects an object within a certain distance of the rear bumper. That could be pure fiction but it sounded convincing at the time. Since taking that advice my rear hatch has opened every time.

When kicking with your feet in, leave your feet there for a brief second before you pull it back. Swing left to right also works, but do not swing too fast.
I have 80%+ successful rate while my wife and kids has only 20~30% the most. Regardless, kids still got excited to try it every time we need to open the hatch. |

Someone else suggested "leaning back" when you do the kick, because there's another sensor that prevents it from opening if you're too close. So far it's worked 100% of the time now.
BMW should have the car beep 3 short times or something to alert you that it got the kick-to-open request, but you're too close. It would go a long way to help people understand what they're doing wrong. I know I spent a lot of time trying to kick at different places around the bumper when that had nothing to do with the issue. |
