Window Tint

I've noticed that th X3 has only the rear windows tinted and not the front. Is that normal/standard? Would it be possible to get all the windows tinted @ the factory?

I don't think that's an option. In my state, the rear tint is too dark for the front windows.

So then if one wants to get the matching tint for the front, would the dealer do it for us as to make sure we can get the matching shade on all the windows?

my dealer told me they farm it out to a local window tinting company - they gave me their number and said I should just go there. but one thing to remember is that the back windows that come tinted actually have the tint built in to the glass - it's not film tint on the glass - whereas the tint that you can get after you receive it is a film that the companies apply to the glass - so I'm betting would be very difficult to match exactly. but interested in others experience if it worked out ok to get the film tint on the fronts

Yeah, it's sort of blended in and not a film, correct. That's where my question lies and one of the reasons I brought this up. If the dealer is sending out or saying to get it tinted ourselves, how easy is it to find an identical shade for the entire set of windows?

35% matches almost perfectly. This was one of the first changes we made to our X3. Just go to a local shop and have them match it, no need to have BMW involved. It's an easy sub $100 job at most reputable tint shops. Takes about 1-2 hours max. And yes, all aftermarket tint will be a film applied to the inside of the windows.

For comparison sake, the Chevy Tahoe next to it has 20% on the fronts to match the OEM 20% on the rears. GM uses a much darker 20% tint on their windows compared to BMWs 35%.

Legality of tint is also something to consider. In Ohio it is illegal. I have gotten a single $85 ticket in the Tahoe during the 10 years the windows have been tinted. The X3, with the 35% isn't really that dark so I don't think we'll ever get a second look from the local PD.

Does anyone have any pictures of a lighter tint on front? Say 50% or so?

As a bike rider and cyclist, I strongly recommend that you do not tint your front windows to match the rears. I would not be able to see your eyes and know if you had seen me whilst at a junction for example. Also in the dark, your peripheral vision would be severely compromised.

Thanks for pointing this out. I tried to have my rear tint matched today and the guy told me it was 20%, but it came out too dark. I am going to have it redone with 35% next week.

i have 35% on the fronts nano-ceramic tint, matches the rear fine. It also depends on the color of interior, i have oyster leather so its a light interior. if you have dark interior it will appear darker.
