If the price were right, I'd be interested in an x4m. That's assuming it had the power to match the price.

The black molding is essential on suv's because of the salt/humidity which causes vehicles to rust. It is preventative AND i actually like tbe way it looks, makes the car look more durable

What I really can't understand is why those nice details of the concept can't make it into production and I'm coming from a design/manufacturing background so I know the compromises that have to be made on a production model/product, but in this case, that extra 10% is nothing out of the ordinary in terms of manufacturing within the capabilities of a company like BMW. I wish BMW had taken an "Apple" approach to product design, they just minimize to the limits any compromise needed on production and develop their designs go into production in a 99% form.
+10000000000000000000000

I was thinking the same thing. Being 90% of the concept doesn't mean much if the other 10% is what makes it cool.

So many manufacturers have reduced or removed the black plastic on their vehicles, so why can't BMW do the same? Especially egregious is the black band on the rear bumper of the X3, but all of the non-M/M-Sport X models suffer. As a company who insists that they sell SAVs instead of SUVs, they shouldn't be the last to move beyond the dated and unnecessary obsession with the ugly black plastic trim.

The decision to have all these concepts as of late, has not been a good idea. Like many have said, it just makes for a major let down.

This is how X3 should look like
a very nice car

however, I wonder if I'm ready to dish out a premium price because X3 is ugly and this X4 looks nice; many are going to prefer the Porsche Macan.

Looks good. Side view looks like a Mazda CX5. That matte black strip down the sides look pretty cheap. Otherwise it's pretty sweet.

the black trim serves to reduce the visual heft of the car, making it appear sleeker. if you've seen models like the x3 when the eventually paint the trim areas body color, the effect is quite drastic.

Is there any chance someone could do a quick Photoshop and remove the black plastic molding from this car? In the case of the base X3 the car doesn't look that great but the M-Sport package makes it look so much cleaner and aggressive. Or if someone is up to the challenge it would be interesting to see a render of what this X4 concept could possibly look like as a X4M.

While I do agree BMW seems to be spreading itself too thin these days by making small niche or redundant cars such as the X1 or GT versions when there are already touring models, I believe there is a legitimate reason to make SUVs such as the X4, especially in the US. Most Americans really dislike the look of wagons and would prefer an SUV even if it means reduced performance or little to no increased interior space over a wagon. Added to this there simply aren't any small, fast, and "sporty" 300+ horsepower luxury SUVs on the market. Neither Mercedes nor Audi offers any models and the closest cars I can think of are the Grand Cherokee SRT8 and Cayenne but they're both either much larger or substantially more expensive than what the X4 would likely cost.

Is there any technical reason why the upcoming 4 series and this x4 not keep their respective concepts lights? They look much better than the leaked production ones of the 4series.

I don't really know about these x4's. Don't get me wrong, I live BMW, but this x4 is a bit odd to me. kinda like a smaller x6 it is, I guess. It seems like BMW are building cars, like always, to accommodate to all different people, and that's fine. But in my option, its not my type of car. But hey, what's BMW got to loose?

God dammit these concept cars are so sexy, hopefully little changes when they enter production. It would make the world a better looking place if they were driving around.

Not that much, is the answer. What we're seeing is platform design at its best from BMW.

They are able to invest in a limited set of chassis designs, transmissions, engines, and other key parts, then mix them around with varying sheet metal to create lots of different cars to appeal to narrow target buyer groups.

This is oversimplifying, but the X4 is essentially new sheet metal on the X3, just as the X6 was to the X5. All of the F3X variants are similar. Apparently, the 5, 6, and 7 series share a lot of platform now. Doing it this way, BMW can bring new models to market with far lower development costs per model than it used to be for them when they marketed a 3, 5, and 7 series, all on different platforms. All about market share and the cheapest way to capture it.

Two things:
  • I suspect this car has a totally different target buyer profile than the 3GT.
  • They're actually pretty different cars under the skin, this one being based on the F25 platform and the 3GT on the F30.
