It just got to expensive [Final Post] (MFBMW)#006

Hello All,

Because of the expense of repairs i've traded in my 2011 X3 for a new Mazda CX-5

Run down of ownership:
About 2yrs ago i got the X3 with 33k now with just under 75k.
Drove the car for 42k miles in the 26 months
I bought the X3 for 24k trade it in for 11k= 13k of depreciation
3k spent in total on repairs not (brakes, battery, tires, oil changes)
3K spent on maintenance (brakes, battery, tires, oil changes)
19K total spent on the X3 or $730 a month

Why i decided it was time for the X3 to get rid of the X3
In my last post i wrote about replacing the fuel pump and fuel module. Well, on my to Christmas Eve Mass the car warning came on saying full power to the transmission lost and it started to miss fire. Took it in to the shop they said it was one of the ignition coils. But they recommended i replace all of them since once one of them goes usually the others are not far behind. They said might as well replace the Spark plugs too. Then they found torn bushing and a leaking valve cover in total 3k more. I had them repair the one ignition coil and started to look for a new car.
The car just became to expensive, 3K is a down payment on a new car.

My Take way
My X3 wasn't a bad car i loved driving it. However, when you buy an use BMW set a side an equal amount of money to that of your car payment for repairs. I honestly thought it wasn't going to be this expensive to own an used BMW. At the amount i spent it would have been smarter to lease an X3.

Thank you all for your help and comments, Happy New Year!!

Lease vs buy?

I had a similar experience with two Volvos that I bought new in 2004. Kept them thru the end of 2016. Both bought new and dealer maintained at one of the better service Volvo centers in the area. At the end of 13 years, I added up my expenses and it turned out to be about the same as leasing a BMW or Volvo. Since that time, I have leased 3x. I am convinced that if one can afford it, its as cheap to lease as to buy and hold for long term.
