So are RFT less durable than a regular tire when it comes to potholes and such? Never owneda vehicle before with RFT so this is something I will need to consider. Lived in PA and Michigan where the roads are pathetic and I've never had to replace a tire.

Because the sidewall is stiffer, they can rupture easier than other tires.

BMW doesn't offer this insurance directly, if they say they do, they are lying. All these insurance plans (except extended maint or warranty) are through 3rd parties, even though BMW is selling them to you! Just know that before buying and know that you can buy these on your own if you want too.
Also before spending $1000 for this, especially if you live in the US, check your insurance. Comprehensive insurance covers everything other than collisions and should cover this. If you ruin 1-2 wheels on a pothole or any other way, that should be covered, so if your comprehensive deductible (usually not the same as your collision) is less than $1K, why would you get this insurance? Also remember comprehensive claims do not go against your record, your rates should NOT go up with claims. Rock takes out your windshield they cover it, why would they not cover a pothole? |

X3 run flat BMW insurance
Just purchased me X3 35i and the dealer here in the Chicago land area suggested insurance coverage for $799 due to experience with other clients having to fork out big bucks with flats and wheel damage due to pot holes. I think this is a safe bet, and after reading this thread I am glade I did. Just hope I will never need it.

Usually you can cancel these and get your money back. 30 day full refund, prorated after that.

I picked up my car last week but a few days prior to me getting it, I sat down with the finance guy and he mentioned the tire/wheel coverage. I had a few days to think about it. When I picked up the car, it wasn't mentioned again but I brought it up. I actually did get it. I felt that since I'm buying my car and how horrible new York roads can be with the potholes, that it was a good idea. These aren't regular tires, they are run flats which are probably more $.

CORRECTION: i just pulled out the warranty form from my glovebox--I paid 1395.00 for 5 year coverage.
ma78, i don't know. i guess i could try. they had a form with all of the different warranties and the costs beside them. it looked like that was the price they charged everyone. next time i'll do some research before i just sign on the dotted line. these forums are really invaluable. |

Is there some double dipping going on???
Both the Bridgesone and Pirelli runflats have a road hazard warentee which is explained in the CD that comes with the car entitiled "Tire Warrentee Interactive Guide" early on it is a free replacement, later it is prorated. I wonder if the Insurance or dealer is filing claims with the tire makers for the cost of the tires. Think about it.......
From the CD Rom on Pirelli, similar statement on Bridgesone. • If a Run Flat tire becomes unserviceable due to workmanship or materials condition or road hazard injury during the initial warranty period, which is one year from the date of original retail purchase (purchase receipt required) or, within the first 2/32” of the original tread, whichever occurs first, the tire will be replaced to the owner at no charge for the tire. |

I suppose if you know you are much more likely to hit potholes at a fast enough speed to damage them due to road conditions or your driving style by all means you can get this insurance. However in 30 years of driving all over the US I have hit one pothole that caused damage. And that was in a 08 Corvette on the interstate. The wheel cost $125 to repair. Plus a $100 alignment. I never even knew it was damaged till I replaced the tires. Remember this is a profit generating activity for the dealer. They are not selling this as a courtesy. I dare say that the vast majority of people that purchase this coverage NEVER have a claim. YMMV. Paul |

They wouldn't be selling it if there wasn't some profit for the dealer.

In Canada
In Canada, I was offered $1200 for one year of tire and rim protection and $2700 for 4 years. Not worth it imo...

I put 72000 miles on my '08 335. I've broken at least 4 tires from potholes @$350 a tire. I'll go for the road hazzard insurance when my car comes in.

My dealer offers several different auto makes. The tire insurance I purchased is provided by Chrysler. Shop around for the best deal. |
