To my knowledge only one phone can be used at anytime.

I do this every day with an iPhone and a BlackBerry. It's in the Bluetooth configuration for the phones, on the BMW side. Make the second iPhone an Additional Telephone.

Take the second Iphone only in the car and go to external devices, add additional phone. Also open your Iphone and let it search for bluetooth device. When they both recognize each other. It will show the BMW # on the Iphone and will ask for a passcode. Just enter 1234 and you will be set to go.

does this allow both phones to be connected via bluetooth at the same time? eg when a call comes in on either phone, it will be connected through the in car speakers? if so, i must be doing something wrong as i need to physically switch which phone to connect through the menu before this happens even though both phones have been set up (maybe incorrectly i guess?)

Both phones can be connected through bluetooth at the same time. To be correctly configured, one phone has to be configured as Telephone, and the second phone configured as Additional Telephone. You can check this in the Phone menu. (Phone, Bluetooth, scroll to phone, Option, Configure Pgone.)

As to incoming calls, it depends, . I needed a 3rd phone to properly test this, and just got around to trying it.

If neither phone has an active call then an incoming call on either Connected phone will be connected through the X3's speakers. However, if one phone has an active call then an incoming call to the other phone will be rejected and sent to voicemail. A message will appear on the NAV screen saying that there was a missed call, and will include the number.

If both phones are present when you start the car, the phone directory will usually be read from the one that is configured as Telephone. However, if both phones were present the last time that the X3 was started, and Telephone and Additional Telephone were swapped (see below), then the directory will be read from the Additional Telephone.

If you want to swap to the phone directory in the other phone then do Phone, Bluetooth, and scroll to the Swap Telephone/Additional Telephone option. It may take a minute to read in the directory, depending on the size.

It's also possible to make calls on both telephones at once, although I don't recommend that the driver do so while actually driving. However, the second telephone to place a call will be disconnected from the X3, and will change from Connected status to Paired status. I don't know what happens after that...

I have both phones paired and have learned how to swap them but my "additional phone" doesn't seem to go hands free on an incoming call. Both are iPhones. But I have done a swap and picked up the call.

Any suggestions to try?

The only suggestion that I have is to make sure that you have the latest BMW phone support update. See page 199 of your manual. I've used it in the past, but this morning the www.bmw.com/update page is returning a 404 error.
