35d Owners

I'm 600 miles in, halfway through my second tank of fuel and i'm getting 34.4mpg average which is about what I would expect from mixed driving. Some Eco-Pro, some Sport. Motorways, Dual Carriageways, Country Roads & Villages.

Have any of you done a long motorway trip with cruise control set to 70 - and achieved in the mid 40's?

What kind of averages do you normally see and does the engine loosen up over time?

Cheers.

ST.

Also, on the topic of the 35d engine, does anyone else hear a distinct whistling noise under hard acceleration?

I get the whistling noise with 30d, I only really notice it when the windows are down. Turbos I presume?

30d I'm getting 35mpg (UK gallon) mixed as well- Occasional Sport, be mostly Comfort, never Eco. I can get 50mpg+ when I'm on 50mph cruise control through the M25 road works. But if I wanted good mpg I'd have gone for the 20d or even the 18d

My 35d will do early to mid 30's around Cornwall. Not bad considering the roads. The best I've seen is 42 mpg on a good run taking it easy. I'm well impressed.

The best I ever got from my X5 40d was 30 mpg if I nursed it. Around Cornwall is was 22 at best.

Yes - I know I only hav the 3.0d but thought you might be interested. Mine is usually only used on the school run - 5 minute journey - straight onto dual carriageway for 1 mile and then 30mph roads for next mile. Best achieved MPG is 40 in ECO - worst about 27MPG (Sport ) and that is from cold.

Did a long trip to coast with boot full as well as four passengers and got 50MPG there and back - mostly 50-60 MPH.

After 2000 mile I did notice a significant improvement in smoothness - especially in comfort as the car started to change gear at higher revs.

I didn't use sport until 1200 miles - wow - what a car.

I will be doing a 6 hour journey soon at the end of July so am looking forward to seeing how many miles I can get out of one tank - so far - have managed just over 500 but this was mixture of the journey above as well as my wife using sport mode to and from school!

I have an a average of 27.3 over 12k miles and 1 year from new. I think I must be enjoying her too much! :-)

Although that seems to be tending closer to 30 lately for some reason. Maybe I need to enjoy her a bit more...

But honestly, I am struggling to do worse than this ... I am really impressed with the performance x economy.

I would like to know what its like to get 45 MPG ... don't see it happening!

Thanks for the responses guys.

Good grief Horsey - You must be on the loud pedal all the time to get those figures. Mind you, it is addictive...

I hope to be able to get mid 40's with Cruise set to 70mph on a long motorway run once the engine is loosened up a bit. We are heading up to North Yorks next month so we'll see what the results are - sounds feasible given Snowman's results.

Chris55 - My current tank is V Power Nitro+ diesel and i'm currently getting 34mpg. My first tank was standard diesel and I only got 29mpg. I'm sure the difference is more the engine bedding in than the fuel, but I'll have to do a comparison later on...

I changed my oils/filter at 9k miles and found the mpg shot up for a couple of tank fills.
Car is due for it's 1st service next week at +17k, and hoping to improve on the 32.4 that the computer is currently showing.
This is with approx 75% of the wife either driving or sitting next to me.
The other 25% is in sport or sport+ mode, and very little motorway miles.
HTH

Interesting, thanks. I bought the service pack so I probably wont be changing anything myself - 17k miles will take a while I think!

How do you find Sport+ ? I didn't ever dare trying that in my 530d for fear of putting the back end into a tree after seeing the "restricted driving stability" message, but I might give it a go now I have all wheel drive.

We just got back from a trip from Cambridgeshire up to North Yorkshire, a round trip of some 500 miles.

160+ miles to our destination saw an average fuel consumption of 44.2mpg (UK) - all motorway driving, in Eco Pro mode with cruise at 70mph the whole way.

I passed the magic 1200 mile mark whilst up there and had a 'play' around the Yorkshire Dales. Some cracking roads up there. Oh. My. God. What a machine.

By the end of the trip, despite driving well over 100 miles on the twisties in sport mode, with frequent bursts of full acceleration, the trip computer said 39.3mpg when we pulled up on the driveway (with a calculated 47 miles added for using Eco Pro mode.)

Thoroughly, thoroughly impressed.

I think the top stated mpg for the 35d X3 is 46mpg so I think if I put a PSI or two more in the tyres, i'd probably achieve that. It may have some more loosening up to do too.

I was also using Shell V Power Nitro+ diesel - but I have no idea how much of a difference that would make, or if it makes a difference at all.

I try to use Shell Nitro (V-power) when I can, although probably more BP Ultimate which I prefer. I've not done any direct comparisons, but certainly these are better than 'normal' diesel.
I also have the service pack, but as I plan on keeping this car for a number of years, I think it's worth it to do intermediate oil changes myself.
I also supply the oil to the garage so to keep the same oil throughout my ownership

Doesn't seem to be much between the 30 or the 35. I get anything from 30 mpg for short trip (about 1 mile from cold) and over 50 when taking it easy, usually average around 40mpg

Just taken a run down the motorway this morning and was getting 37@80mph average on the computer, backed off due to traffic to an average of 75mph average and the consumption went to 40mpg.

I've just read this thread.

I'm surprised at how similar the 20d and 35d are in terms of economy... I thought there would be a much bigger difference.

Given that I can get 44.2mpg this early on, it looks hopeful then once my engine has run in a bit more I could get more - which would be excellent.

Not that it's all about mpg in a 35d... apart from when you are on a motorway using cruise control on a long journey, as that's when you want to maximise your fuel efficiency.

Just can back from Dublin up the N2 (easy flat road) and after resetting the computer at a fuel stop I had 64.4mpg at an average of 50mph for the first 12 miles, couldn't believe it. Dropped a little for the rest of the journey once I hit some towns and roundabouts but by the time I got to Omagh it was at 56.2mpg at an average of 50.2mph, 107 miles later. All 'A' road and a few towns so I was pretty much sticking at the limit.
It seems economy improves once run in, mine has just passed 13,000 miles.
