Neutral in no-start and tranny unlock revisited

If your X3 was stuck in the road, couldn't start, out of gas, whatever, could you put it in neutral to push it out of the road? If it had to be towed, could you put it in neutral to get it onto a flatbed? I've been digging through old forums on these two issues. Below is a pertinent PDF and two sets of instructions. My question is, has anyone ever successfully performed one of these procedures? Also, does anyone know where there are instructions on how to access the tranny screw, and what type of tool is needed to drive the screw?
