Winter tyres - run flats or normal

Been looking at winter tyres for my forthcoming x3.

Seen Dunlop winter run flats but they are over £400 a tyre for 245/45 r19.

Anyone got any experience with winters of this size either normal or run flat ?

What's peoples thoughts on just going for normal winter tyres and carrying a can of tyre weld ?

I’ve been looking for some 245/45-18 snow tires and although there are plenty of regular (non run-flats) available in the US including Michelin X-Ice X-12’s at USD 182. The only run-flat I found was the Dunlop SP Sport 3D at USD 270 so the total extra cost of the run-flats is about USD 352 per set.

A pressurized sealant can like Tire Weld or Fix-a-Flat can work in an emergency, but has the reputation of rendering the tire impossible to balance.

Another possibility to consider is to carry a small 12V. compressor and a rubber/fiber plug kit. I’ve used these before with perfect results. Of course, if a tire picks up a nail while the wife is driving, the run-flats would be an infinitely better decision!

Thanks. Have gone with Dunlop runflat sport 3d winter tyres. Got a quote for £230 per tyre which makes the other companies quote of £400 look like they are trying to cash in on the snow in the uk at moment

I have Nokian winter RFTs on my 18' style 307. A bit noiser on the motorway, but they have been working just great in the snow in Klosters, and also on ice.

As for RFT, do you really want to change a tyre in winter? (Davos was -16 mid Saturday morning).

Anyway, great to hear you talking about winter tyres - def. worth it - check out the comparison:

Colour: deep sea blue
Spec: 2.0d auto, only notable spec exceptions are sports seats (too hard after E60 comfort seats) and DAB (I forgot).
Pics will follow at the weekend, when daylight re-appears.

My current E60 has comfort seats and you got me worried now as my new X3 is ordered with the sport seats

Get smaller rims and tires for winter. I am sure that 17" will fit, which should allow you to buy winters and rims for the same price as 19" winter tires alone.
