Rattling at Idle

Hey Guys - my wife has a 2013 X3 35i Msport with 125k miles. There's a weird issue where there is a loud sounding rattle when I'm in Drive, stopped with the brakes applied. When I start to accelerate or put it in park, the sound goes away. Any ideas?

Garage List
Use mechanics stethoscope to isolate the location of the rattle.

Could be a tensioner and pulley issue. It’s a common problem.

Does it sound like it's coming from the passenger side of the car? I just started hearing this in my '15 35i. When I turn the a/c off it stops and returns when I turn it on again.

Hard to tell which side it's coming from but I feel like it's related to the AC as well. I'll try turning the AC off and see if that makes a difference.

It's just so weird that the sound goes away if I put it in Park or start to accelerate. It's only when I'm stopped, in Drive, with my foot on the brake. The car sounds like a ghetto beater…lol

Yup, it stops when I turn off the AC and starts again when I turn it back on.

Maybe the air conditioning compressor bearing has worn out.
