05 X3 loud bang
My X3 produces a loud bang when making short 90° turns or turning a roundabout.
At the BMW shop they tell me that the central diff. is fried and it needs replacing. The reason why it"s fried is not changing front and rear tires at the same time. At the beginning no one at BMW was aware of this and they did not tell people to pay attention. But I'm not convinced, I think it's more a suspension thing. Every time they lift the car to check it, the bang goes away for the first fifteen minutes of driving. Anyone else having this experience. |

I had the same issue and fixed it.
My initial fear was that it was the transfer case servo actuator gear (which is one possible cause), but in my specific case, it was just an ABS wheel speed sensor, so a £20 fix. I wouldn't drive it until fixed - those loud bangs are 'transmission wind-up' because the wheels are rotating at different rate, and the tension is building up in the system, and something expensive is going to break. Mine felt like the brakes where on while turning corners, until it banged.
