I have to re-awaken this topic since I am still waiting for the redesigned steering rack. The dealer in Malta keeps telling me that they are waiting for the new steering rack but this has been months now.

My car is almost 18 months old and I had the steering rack problem since day one. After several months of waiting the steering rack was replaced only to redevelop the same problem after just a few weeks.

I called the dealer several times and they keep on telling me that they are waiting for the new design. I wonder if anyone from the UK (we drive on the same side as the UK) has had the new steering rack installed and whether this resolved the problem.

Eighteen months down the line I am still driving a defective car so I am really disappointed with the overall service received from BMW. I doubt I will opt for another BMW in the future.

Any feedback would be much appreciated.

Hi All,

I have the same problems that all you guys are having.
My car is from Nov-2012 and has 34000km now.
The problem has I think always been there but never caused me any anoyance until recently.
When driving over the smallest bump the "clunk" happens. Even when the car is switched off and you move the steering left /right the "clunk" happens.
I mentioned this to the BMW service and they directly said that they would order a new steering rack.
I have an appointment on the 14 jan 2014 to replace it.
I will keep you posted

Same here. Steering rack to be replaced. Waiting for the rack coming from Germany. Car is staying at dealers for 2 weeks. They took down the roof liner to address cracking noise from the back of moonroof . Driving 320i for the time being. The dealer is great so far.

Yes sorry,

Went to the dealers (14th Jan) and they had the car for about 3-4 hours (other small things were done)
Then I get a phone call to say the sterring rack was not in their magazine.!?!? and that they would have to reschedule my appointment??
So I have probably a 3 week wait again. !!

I also got delayed. Apparently someone from BMW was at the dealer and wants them to try the transfer case drive shaft first before doing the steering rack to see if the noise goes away.

Anyone heard about that possibility?

I had the same issue from day one. Didn't take too much notice of it. But it was annoying coming off the driveway, minor bumps on the road and you name it. Finally the steering was replaced because it was a known issue with the new 3 series as well - same steering rack. The updated part has some what cured the issue. But I still have the issue of a clunk when putting the car in reverse.

Also recently I had a steering malfunction message come up. The latest software has fixed the issue, lets say for how long. I had my car delivered in august 2011 and was only fixed in July 13 because the tech couldn't diagnose the problem.

It's a know issue with the F25 steering and there is a PUMA measure. Persist and get it fixed if the car is under warranty or not. It's a design issue with the steering rack.

Update: so they tried the transfer case but that did not fix it. Steering rack is next.

I wonder why they didn't just do the steering rack right away. Is it expensive to do for them?

I imagine it's not cheap. It is going to cost BMW quite a bit. This is a common issue.

I got the car back, and after they replaced the steering rack, the issue has been solved. I will say this only came after almost a month and a half of them trying various parts in the suspension and residing areas.

Thank goodness for warranty, I think everything together would have been over $8000 since they changed so many suspension parts and there were so many labor hours involved in finding the issue.

So mine has just developed the clunk. The one I have is the one that clunks when I move the wheel left/right, even stationary (and even with engine on).

1 year, and 19000 miles -- I really thought I was safe from this one!!

5 weeks at dealer's garage waiting for steering rack. Just called me 2 days ago, it is another week or more of waiting. I'm still paying for the car that I don't drive. Pretty frustrating.

Hi all, back again....
So I get a call from our BMW service department. The steeringrack has arrived after waiting since the last disapointing visit, and it will be fitted 18th February 2014.
Lets hope that fixes the problem!

After 6 weeks I finally got my car back. Steering rack is replaced and so far so good. Looking at the invoice though I think they put same design of rack cause number of the part taken out is the same as number of the part put in. Like I said it is OK right now. I'll update if it changes. I prey it wont.

Well I have had the stering rack replaced last week and so far the Clunk has gone.
Like others here I will wait and see.
I don't have a part number as it is a leasing car and therefore I don't get to see the invoice.
