per request here's an iphone shot of the rear xline trim piece painted matte black on a titanium X3. This was a quick easy job on a cheap plastic trim piece that looks vaguely metallic in it's original finish.
Steps
1. Remove a row of Philips head screws.
2. Pull top edge carefully out of invisible cut outs.
3. Sand lightly.
4. Spray matte black.
5. Reinstall.
I did it months ago and it's holding up fine on the road and in high pressure car washes etc.

Addition: LED brake and signal lights, heated windshield, 20in wheels, diesel engine, manual transmission, power steering wheel position adjustments, ventilated seats for summer, blind spot warning
Change: relocate control for rear door and heated steering wheels, bigger coverage of the rear defroster

I don't like black wheels but I'm getting why others may choose them. These BMW's generate brake dust like no other car on earth. My 19" wheels look terrible after two weeks if I don't clean them. This winter they will just have to look brake dust black until spring.

Blind spot indicators and a less stiff horn (you really have to press it hard on BMWs).
