What top gear speed at 2000 RPM?

Hello to all forum members,
After driving different vehicles for many years I concluded that – in top gear – petrol-/gasoline engines rev higher than their diesel sister vehicles – and likewise automatic vehicles will rev lower in top gear – for the same (cruising) speed. My 20D F25 8speed Auto – at 2 000 RPM will travel at an indicated 130km/h (80mph) – (127km/h GPS speed) Would like to ask if members/owners can indicate here what speed they are travelling at when reaching 2000 RPM (top gear) – and/or at 80mph/130kmh – what RPM showing on the instrument panel. Comments regarding previous X3 – and also all other BMW makes – would also be appreciated. Thank you !!

I guess nobody else cares. (Or they find it in the spec sheets somewhere.)

Just took my 2011 X3 28i out. With the N52 six cylinder and 8 speed auto, looks like about 66 mph indicated at 2000 rpm in 8th. I'll let you know about the E90 M3 later, but it's going to be a much lower speed.

2008 E90 M3, 6 speed manual: 48 mph at 2000 rpm, and it doesn't like it!

2013 X3 35i 8speed and 72 mph at 2000 RPMs. Still pulls decently in 8th gear but in auto mode readily downshifts for easy acceleration.

Thank you for all the replies so far.

Would be interesting to hear from owners of 30D and 35D vehicles - also the new 4cyl 28i and 335i 6 cylinder. Locally we also now have a 20i 4 cylinder F25 available.

The slow burning, high torque characteristics of diesel allows lower rpm in highest gear - and the manufacturer probably alters gearing to fit general speed limits to fall in the optimum torque band - high performance vehicles like M3 likely excluded.

Would be interesting to see how V8 BMW's compare (F25 obviously excluded)

(Suppose a V8 diesel could be the ultimate ?)

On high speed Autobahn you probably would move out of the narrowish torque band on to the the kW plateau if traveling at high speed - obviously more applicable again to the Diesel engine - as the petrol-/gasoline engine has a wider spread of both - eg. 35i.

But thanks again!!
