Pirelli p Zero Run Flat
I got my used car last year in August and they where fitted with the mentioned Pirelli 245/50 r18. I thought the car managed alright at the time. During wintertime I switched to Nokia wintertires on my 17 inch . I got my summertires on again and noticed a big difference in handling. The Pirellis is just plain awfull ! The car need to be steered all the time and hitting a bump makes the car go all over the place. It just follow every line on the (bad) road.
Now,I start to read about this and it seems that the run flat could be the problem. I came across one site that explains that BMW has been set up with run flats and if you want to use ordinary tires you need to tune the suspension. Is this really correct? If so,why does the car handle better on my winter tires? I came to the conclusion that I want ordinary tires ,but what to choose? Any suggestion? I have looked at the GY Efficientgrip SUV |

Maybe your winter tires rides better because they are new or your Pirelli might be defective. Runflats do not make your car handle better or worst, but it can make the ride a bit stiffer. You do not need to re-tune your suspension if you switch to non-runflats, you didnt do it for the winter tires right? If you want to switch to non-runflats the Michelin Primacy is a good choice.

I experienced exactly the same when switching from non-rft 17" winter to my rft 18" summer. But after a few days I got used to it and now I hardly notice. But I'll replace the rfts with regular tyres when they are worn out.

I notice a difference when I switched from the OEM 18 in winter tires to the OEM 19 in wheels and RFTs. I plan to switch to Michelin SS later this summer or early fall.

Michelin mxm4 are excellent all season tires. See tire rack.com for reviews.

My 2012 model came with 19" Pirelli P-Zero run flat, 245 front and 275 rear, there is an insane amount of grip. My personal preference is a more sporty , stiff ride so i have no issues with it, coming from a Audi A3 S-line 18" setup.
I have not use my 19" winter set yet (Nokian Hakka R2, 245 all corners), but assume they will be more comfortable due to the softer compound. I noticed from time to time the steering wheel pull slightly to one side, while seemingly the road was flat (somewhat flat), on the highway where it is truly flat I have not observed the same. It would be interesting to see if this behavior will be the same with winter tires. |
