My brother drives a Porky Panamera. It's the ugliest damn thing on four wheels.

Anyway, back to the Cayenne. The base model is nothing more than a tarted up Toureg, and the S is a good 20k more than a 35i. Hydraulic steering be damned. I'll believe the S is better when it goes head to head with a 35i (with DHP of course) on the track. Until then, all this talk is mindless bluster.

oh don't get me wrong, I really like the Porsche too, inside is amazing with the refresh, but I can't see spending the premium for the Porsche name, especially for the base engine. The S engine is really nice and in 5+ years we might get that, especially if they can improve MPG before then. I know a few people with the new Cayanne S and they all said it blows away the base engine, its like they just offer that engine to make people think they can afford the Cayanne because of the starting price...

I don't doubt they're arguably the best SUV to drive, they may have great options/features, great interiors.
But to me, the bulbous exterior, is butt ugly, I remember years back, when I saw one, and I haven't heard of them - I didn't know it was a porche - I'd have guessed some weird lower market manufacturer!

Ok, so it's a porsche, I like 911's and other porches - I'd buy one of those and a X5/X6 or Land Rover, never a Cayenne.
If someone gave me one, I'd sell it!

Rant over.
Have you seen the new Cayanne's? new models came out this last year, much better looking than the old ones, I wouldn't buy an old one, would buy the new look ones though.

Obviously it's hard to compare when Porsche is in a different price bracket. The lowest "Touring" package Cayenne starts at $61K but IMO isn't even the one to get. That would be the Cayenne S, which, in its "Touring" package, starts at $82K, putting you well within X5M territory. I like the redesign of the Cayenne except for the tail lights, which are butt ugly. The interiors look really nice. The X3 35i should easily outperform a base Cayenne and still be cheaper.

Base Cayenne is the only luxury sporty SUV you can get a 6MT. Can't get one in X3/X5 anymore. It also outhandles all the competition, except the M trucks.

Styling is subjective, but Cayenne and Panamera sales are doing really well.

Interior are more upscale than X3/X5.

But, it was a budget issue for me, so that's why I got the X3 on order, very similiar speeds 0-60 as the new cayenne s, but over $15k cheaper (in canada).
Test drove both and totally disagree. Definitely a comparison here. Can see that a person might prefer one overvthe other, but they're very comparable.

Umm yeah...here's some figures,

Cayenne 0-60: 7.4s ($47k)
Cayenne S 0-60: 5.6s ($64k)
X3 35i 0-60: 5.5s ($41k)

Idk perhaps the cayenne does much better on the track and the 35i turns out to be an absolute pig but tbh how many people are going to go track an SUV vs the amount of people who just race stop light to stop light? Don't get me wrong the cayenne is a nice car but for the price you pay it better be because in terms of performance it just doesn't deliver.

I've never driven the car myself but I have ridden in my friend's dad's cayenne turbo S and man that car is nice, it's definitely the best SUV out there imo. Personally I'd never buy a cayenne unless I'm wealthy enough to afford a turbo; there are just so many great cars out there between the $30-60k price range, why pay such a large premium for a status symbol/name?

On a side note the same friend just got an E60 M5 last week and wow that car is the definition of fast. The handling is phenomenal and loved that V10 growl.

Agreed, materials aside I despise the BMW dashes, too cold and utilitarian for my tastes, I want some bling dammit.

Strange, but I was just considering these two cars myself. Glad to know I am not the only one who is looking at apples and oranges. For me, the only criteria was that I wanted a luxury SUV with good looks and performance, and both of these appealed to me (GLK, Q5, Q7, X5, ML et al just didn't do it for me). I previously owned two X3s so I had a definite bias going in, but I did shop both extensively. BTW, I am past my "racing days" so I looked at the non-turbo versions of each, although I wanted a decent road performance.

I liked what they did to the Cayenne (the old one looked like a tank to me) without sacrificing size or space. However, the price differential (once you add all the options) just didn't measure up. You need at least 25K price add-on to the Cayenne to feel that it matches the X3 in equipment, when fully loaded. I also had some issues with the Cayenne's performance. Put simply, the X3 w/o turbo did not seem as bad as the Cayenne w/o turbo, compared respectively to their turbo brethren. The increased size of the new X3 helped, as I no longer felt that the Cayenne's advantage there was a deal braker. In the end, I could not justify the 20-30 K price differential to myself.

Bottom line, I got the X3, MS with black leather, fully optioned and so far am very happy (a week and counting). I still think that the Cayenne would have been a good option as well, but this was my choice.

I've changed my mind! I just saw a brand new black Cayenne S and it looked awesome. Much better in real life than in the photos, and much better looking than the old one

if only Porsche would have HUD - esp. since the speedometer is actually kindof hard to see on the cayenne as the Tach is in the middle (sporty, but not super pragmatic).
That and the bigger NAV on BMW (I'm terrible with direction), and smaller size is leaning me towards X3.

I see smaller as a plus rather than a minus on my scale since I'm a lone commuter 90% of the time! Less gas, better handling - all things being equal.

Saw a Cayenne S Hybrid today at the pump. The guy was pumping gas when I arrived, and I was finished before he was.

I filled up 17 gallons for about 80 dollars. He filled up 22 gallons for 110 dollars. I could see the tears in his eyes glistening like dimes rolling down his face.

I know the tank is bigger on the Cayenne, but still. Just the idea of spending that much in order to see the needle at F...I couldn't justify it.
