Why would you "need" to remove the airbag control module?

The car hit something with the front, not big damage but drivers airbags explode. We ordered new airbags from BMW dealership and they say we will need to take out the control unit and give them to "refresh" it as the data of accident is stored inside this unit and needs to be refreshed in order to have SRS lamp on dashboard off and airbags fully working. I expected it could be done by connecting some software to the car while SRS unit is on it's place but they say it's not possible...
so that is why I need your help.
