iphone 5
Well it was nice for the 3 weeks I had it. New phone has a different plug in so our BMW adapter will not work with the new "5" phones. Wonder what BMW plans to do?

The iPhone 5 is also taller so it would't work in the current iPhone cradle anyway. My guess is BMW will release a new cradle adapter for the iPhone 5 but who knows how long it will take.

It's the cradle adaptor that's the issue, not the USB cable

From Apple's site: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD...30-pin-adapter
"This adapter lets you connect devices with a Lightning connector to many of your 30-pin accessories.* Video and iPod Out not supported." I assume this means, we won't be able to use the iPod interface in our cars to control the iPod on the new phone. So the ability to change tracks etc. using the car stereo goes away, if you are using the adapter? I guess it would be better to buy an extra "lightning" cable, to use in the car, rather than an adapter for the existing cable. (Or of course, not buy iPhone 5 to begin with) |

Yea, may wait until there is a BMW "fix" and just continue using the iPhone 4.

Whereas you can't use the iPod interface to change tracks, you'll still be able to control tracks on your iPhone using iDrive through external devices - USB (as you can do for music on other USB devices) or wireless with Bluetooth Audio

Without analog out, we will no longer be able to get sound from our iphones through the usb port. From my experimentation with usb hubs which I think is a good similation, you might still be able to control the iphone and see track information, but there just won't be any sound. I suspect there will be some people making dacs for this lightning interface. It would be nice if the idrive could play the music directly (digitally). In other words it would be nice if the idrive's digital to analog converters did the work.
Update: I see in the other thread there is a post which links an article about the apple adapter. I was right about the dac, but the apple adapter has a dac built in. Cool. Last edited by bluedevils; 09-14-2012 at 08:25 AM.. |

I was so looking forward to that (no sarcasm). It could be more convenient and safe because it would be faster to read the message. disclaimer: I don't mean reading and driving, but at a stop light or stopped at the side of the road.

I also posted this in the other iPhone5 Thread:
nteresting info: The new iPhone 5 has a new "Lightning Connector" that replaces the existing 30-pin connector. There will be an adapter to go from old 30 pin to new lightning connector. That adapter will support analog audio..but it will not support iPod out mode. The ability to use iPod out mode began with iOS4, and BMW was the first to jump on it: http://www.macrumors.com/2010/07/12/...ture-in-ios-4/ But until the is some sort of native Lightning connector to handle this (and not sure if it's even possible), then you cannot plug your iPhone 5 into your BMW (even with the Lightning/30pin adapter) and use the "Plug In" features. http://www.tuaw.com/2012/09/13/light...-ipod-out-doe/ Edited to add.. Article from cNet saying that new connector might be a problem in cars: http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13746_7...compatibility/ My guess is that there will need to be an iDrive software update to ensure compatibility.

I pre ordered the iphone 5 and should receive it 9/21. i'll test and report back. i'm hoping the USB cable plug would work fine. I don't have the ugly cradle. . apple is known for making its products backwards compatible.
