Fuel gauge

How accurate is the fuel gauge? If it says 15 miles left, is it really 15 miles before it stops or is there a buffer?

I don't know, but the manual says "Refuel below a range of 30 miles/50 km; otherwise, engine functions are not ensured and damage may occur."

Could be more, could be less. Remember that it's just an estimate based on your recent driving (last 15 mins, I think I read).

Mine got down to 20 miles recently and I was shocked that I managed to put over 62 litres in the tank which means there was very little left in the tank (about 5 litres). Seems that BMW is more accurate than the Audi's I'm used to driving (they always had a big cushion).

Personally I try to fuel up as soon as the fuel up reminder comes on.

Same here. (and it was goodbye to 85 quid or so!)

I took my last car which was a VW down to -5 miles of fuel remaining once. It's still going. It's a miracle!

I've also had £97 worth of diesel in the X3 - almost down to 0 and expensive diesel out in the sticks

You can get an exact reading off the dash hidden menu

Good to know. On my IS250 I could go 60 miles after the display said 0. No messing around on the X3, 0 means 0. I'll take note how much gas I fill up next time it's close to 0.
