Ya, I got that email from bmw Canada too.

I feel like buying a Garmin and sticking it to the dash with 2 sided tape... Then sending a pic to bmw.

$65k car and bmw wants $200 for a software update that should be free at least throughout the warranty period.

The price tag sounds excessive, but then again this is not new to us, is it?

It might be easier to swallow if the dealer could actually clarify how much changes are included, and how often these map updates are expected.

Compare dollar to dollar yes there are many after-market Navs or even investing some of the cost into projecting your smartphone on screen, but none of those alternatives are 100% satisfactory.

To share my experience on the other side of the pond, I approached my dealer about maps being out-dated due to many new roads near Oslo, Norway. I challenged him to let me test the new update and if it works to my satisfaction I will pay for it. Long story short, he took a test drive with me and the Nav led us to a round-about that does exists anymore, he let me off with the updates for free.

Not saying that you can expect the same from your local dealer, just saying that if the update really makes the Nav more accurate, it is worth considering.

This is poor customer service. When a lot of portable sat-nav are offering free for life map updates.
I wouldn't mind paying if there was a big software uplift, but paying for map updates is wrong. My car is only 6 months old, these updates should be free.

Can I reject the car as not fit for purpose?

if you have a 2012-2013 F25, that has the 2012 version of the Map, BMWNA will upgrade that to 2013 1A for free at your near by dealer.

I would consider the update if the BMW Nav was 1/3 as useful as my Android smartphone which gets navigation from Google for free.

There's been a few times that I've just searched my destination on my smartphone and placed it right in front of the nav screen instead of even bothering to send the destination to the car.

To be honest I have never been lead astray by my 2013 BMW navigation system. But to have BMW ask for $200 in May 2013 for my 2013 model year car is pretty ridiculous! Shame on BMW for this excessive money grab attempt.

Hi - my question is why can't the screen basically run our google maps etc on the screen in a similar way it will play the music from our smart phones? I agree, I would pay for a larger screen but had no desire for what I consider "old-tech" by having maps in my car. I sold my Garmin years ago.

I have seen people selling the 2013 Nav FSC codes online for 50 euro - not saying it is on the up and up, just saying I have seen cheaper options. The maps themselves are cheap - Tischer sells them for $40 bucks, it is the FSC code that is the expensive piece to allow for the install of the maps.

Mine is a 2012 model that I got in Feb. 2012. So your saying the dealer will upgrade my nav for free? Is there some sort of bulletin about this? what is a 2013 1A?

I find it hard to believe BMW would do anything for free. Anyway, it looks like my car has the older version. I logged into "My BMW" and there doesn't appear to be any updates listed??

I wonder if the FSC code is unique for every map year or remains the same so that once you have it all you need is the media for all subsequent updates?

The FSC code is unique to both the update version and your VIN. It's not one universal FSC code for all vehicles, since it is derived from each car's VIN.

I asked to get my Nav updated at the dealer. They took my keyfob, put it into their reader and was told mine is not part of the Nav update models. I have a 2012 purchased new in 2/12. They wanted $200 for the update and $100 to install. WTF! I'll live wih my version unless I can try another dealer. So how did you get a free update? what year is yours?

Hi I have a 2011 X3, I am wondering if anyone has tried any 3rd party providers. I was looking at BMWnav.net and they are offering an update for $50. Would like the speed cameras and real time traffic. Agree can get this and more on a Garmin...thanks in advance for any assistance....
