Computer
Well I took my 2013 X3 to my neighborhood body shop today for some minor body work. While he was tack welding some pins to pull out the dent on the left rear quarter panel, the sound insulation caught fire. The left back inside cover burned and it looks like several computers and associated wiring in that area was burned and damaged. Does anyone know if the main computer is in that area? I know I should have taken it to my Dealership for the work so please no I told you so comments, I'm trying to keep a positive outlook on this
Well here it is May 28th and I'm still waiting to have my car repaired from March 25th. After sitting at the BMW dealership for nine days being evaluated for the damage, three weeks to get a hand made wiring harness assembled and shipped from Germany to the US and a week and half of working on it, I was told an additional harness is needed...three more weeks. At least the dealership is now paying for a rental. I'll be glad to get out of the rental Kia and back into my car. Last edited by TomBlue; 05-28-2013 at 04:42 PM.. Reason: Update |

There's a lot of electronics in there. The cost could be incredible, but the body shop guy (or more likely his insurance) will have to pay for it. You NEVER heat things up without regard to what's behind it.

These things happen. It should not be a chargeable accident since no one was driving. |

X3 Fire Update
An update on my computer fire problem. The X3 was towed to Flemington, NJ, BMW a couple of days ago. The adjuster from Traveler's Insurance appraised the damage at a little over $5,500. Talking with the service writer at Flemington BMW, the harness may be spliced, if so no big deal. If it has to be replaced, a two week job with the entire vehicle having to be gutted to do the rewiring of the entire harness. It may be more than the $5,500 the appraiser quoted. I'll keep everyone informed of the progress. The picture is worth a thousand words...heart breaking not to mention the smell. Did I mention that the fire was caused by the owner of Jim's Auto Body in Milford, NJ...

Ouch!
So the insurance commercial of the BBQ being knocked into the tailgating SUV and bursting into flames it's so far fetched. Even after repairs, the smell will probably linger for ever. Good Luck with it. P.S. Lived in that part of the state for several years. Peapack-Gladstone |

WOW!!!!
That goes beyond negligence. there's no way that vehicle is going to be 100% the way it was before it was taken to the body shop. I'd push for full replacement. How many used cars will you look at to purchase that have been burned and the wiring harness spliced......SCREW THAT! |
