I wonder if BMW USA would allow special orders for this (with summer performance tires!) as a factory option. I prefer the more aggressive look of a staggered setup and M Sport package is generally about looks anyway. I highly doubt understeer would be noticeable if we're not tracking our X3s.

Are you open to 20s? Tischer has two options in 20's that look to be staggered.

Quazi Stagger

You can get a little bit of a stagger by purchasing a tire for the back that is about an inch or so wider. I'm speaking about the 369Ms. I purchased the M-Sport package and when I get new tires, I will get replace the front two with the standard 245/45/19s... but on the back (on the same rim/wheel) I will get 275/40/19s. The key is making sure the "aspect ratio" basically the profile of the tire remains the same especially on these all-wheel drivers.

This is an acceptable tire combination that, in effect, gives you an inch wider in the back. If you want more aggressive than than, I would be cautious and speak with the service department. You don't want your bearings all outta whack.

btw

In inches, the tires that came on my car are all just under 10" wide. When I get new ones and stagger them, the back will be shy of 11".

Look at http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Select...2&autoModClar= for tires available for the x3.

I haven't checked to see which come in RF... but I figure I have a year or two before that becomes an issue.

Can you actually put 275's on the M-Sport rims? I thought the widest was 265.

BMW Canada sent me the 369s with 275 in the back and 245 in the front. I am still on winter tires for another month but they look really good. Stand by for pictures!

In Canada at least:

2011 MSport Models came with 19x8.5's and 19x9.5's for a staggered set up.
2012 Msport Models came with 19x8.5's all around for a square set up

Tires were 245's front and rear for square and 275's in the back for staggered.

Not so, my 2011 35i MSport has the 19" wheels, but NOT staggered, regular factory order.

I just ordered my X3 35d M with optional 19" and here in Europe they are staggered at 19x8.5 and 19x9.5. I must say I like the look way more.

bumping this. Just thought to have the dialogue. Do you know why BMW stopped offering staggered fitment in North America for this style?

Google X3 transfer box problems......

If you put staggered wheels on an X3 they MUST be BMW OEM wheels with OEM (Star marked) tyres. If you don't you WILL have transfer box wind-up issues sooner or later.

So how does the X3's computer know whether there's a Star on the tire. There's no way that will make a difference. The tread diameter changes the whole life of the tire.

Can you please explained this to me? How do tires or wheels affect the transfer box? Just so you know, I have heard some of the most ridiculous claims come out of the mouths of BMW dealers in recent days and weeks. This includes the claim that BMw wheels costs $2000 per or that you can't put a BMW center medallion on a non-BMW wheel for trademark rules. As I far as I know, you can use any wheel/tire combination you want so long as they are the same diameter front/rear, you clear the brakes, they are the correct offset and the TPMS reads up.

This is from experience, so not dealer BS. Would you put staggered tyres on a Land Rover or Jeep and expect it to work?
I'm trying to help here, if you google it you will find more people with the same issues.

When I bought my car it had 3 different makes of tyre - all were the correct sizes. The 2 back tyres were new and the same make, the fronts were different makes and wear. Below 30mph the juddering from the gearbox was extremely noticeable. A change of tyres to star marked Pirellis was enough to cure the problem. I also changed the transfer box oil as a precaution.

A bit of research has since shown that tyre manufacturers take extra measures to ensure that the sizes for BMW OEM staggered wheels on 4x4s are not only the same rolling radius but also the same weight. This ensures that the 4x4 system 'feels' the same tyre at each corner. If staggered tyres are used then the transfer box will be trying to drive each axle at different speeds - it simply can't do that for sustained periods and damage results.

Ultimately what you say is almost correct;
"you can use any wheel/tire combination you want so long as they are the same diameter front/rear" the only way to be certain is by fitting the same size wheels & tyres all round.

Do you remember when Audi had problems with their 4wd system and were telling owners they had to have tyres with the same tread depth and if replacing one they all had to be changed.

I would have a serious discussion with BMW about a new vehicle that had 3 different tire manufactures. Something went wrong somewhere.
