Snow chains for 19" wheels ?

Im wondering if anyone (especially folks up in NorCal who drive up to Tahoe ) has had any luck finding suitable snow chains for the 19" wheels. I have read in other forums that BMW discourages use of snow chains on the 19"s, but out here there are mandates at Level2 that something must be carried in the car at all times.

Since Norway hit oil, we have developed a lot of (mean) Norwegian stories, but I believe they have developed a neat solution to temperary "snow chains", called "snow mats", which are plastic items, which - unlike chains - can be easily installed.

I assume BMW not liking snow chains on 19" is risk of damage on vehicle - if driving fast. Plastic is somewhat less aggressive than steel.
