Forum member MindBraker on the X3 bimmerfest forum found a direct replacement board for $20 shipping included that may be a good alternative for those of you who don't want to solder wires etc. He also suggested using a 250mA Mean Well driver; I have been using the 500mA driver for months without any ill effects.

The replacement PCB is $20 shipped worldwide:

Update... The replacement board is a super easy fix for those who don't want to solder. I used it for both the inner and outer lights. The replacement is not as thick as the original Valeo board requiring you to tack it down in order to hold it securely in place (I used hot glue). Highly recommend it!

You are a champ! This is why the car forums are awesome!
Thanks for the write-up, piece of cake fix. Ordered 3 spares just in case.

You are welcome! As a fellow owner of a "Break My Wallet" brand car, its good to be able to do somethings for ourselves without having to resort to dealer and BMW prices.

Also member Ogee from Norway on the Bimmerfest forums has created a PCB that can have the equivalent connector and the meanwell part on it so you dont have to cut any wires. Those of you handy with a soldering iron can get his eagle CAD files, order a PCB and solder the connector and MeanWell driver for a factory look. He is using a MeanWell 300ma driver to be closer to the Valeo specs, though the 500ma on my car after 16 months has caused no problems...

Just a word of lookout for those replacing the LED driver board with ones from eBay: I had mine replaced and I got interference from the board and it affected my comfort access and keyless entry. I got the intermittent message that my key can not be recognized.

Still looking for another brand and see if it will be less of an interference.

Any recommendations?

They guys where I bought the first board was kind enough to replace it with boards which I believe is from Russia. Will test it when it arrives.

Here is the picture, sent to me, of the replacement boards from Russia:

During the last year, I replaced already 3 boards, waiting for the 4th OEM to go South, from Hyperlights - Russia.
Absolutely no issues with comfort access or any other functions on the car.

On another note:
I change the garage door opener with a new generation Lift Master. I didn't like the light output, so I changed the bulbs with LED bulbs. Nice bright light, but: both BMW's failed to open/close the garage door. Did some research, and Lift Master has only a few LED light bulbs that are compatible with the garage door opener because they say it WILL interfere with the signal. Weird, but it happened to mine. So maybe if one switches the regular tail lights with some LED lights from Chinaland, those could interfere with the signal of the comfort access. After all these are diodes.

Hey guys, I have had the same issue on my X3, and I bought new led tail light replacement driver board from a UK website. The quality of the product was super fine, and the price was quite low. I would recommend you guys to give it a try. Here is the product I’ve been using for 6 months and it’s working perfectly.

Both outer left and inner right seem burnt out. I tried wiggling the wire on one of them and for a moment it lit up then dimmed out after 2 seconds.
Any advice would be very much appreciated!
Thanks.
hello guys.. I have the 2012 X3 AND ONLY the outer sides light up...

I replaced my first board with the Russia one no issues the second one I got from another source (I'll have verify which) on eBay and it is currently interfering with my comfort access and my Tpms which is now giving me error msgs stating there is interference!

You should have 4 lights total, the two outer ones and the two inner ones on the tailgate. If I were you, I would just replace all 4 so you don't have to pay twice for shipping in the future.

1 down, 3 to go

Just repaired my drivers side tail light. Ordered 4 MW 500mA drivers. Too cold out to do the rest. Come on spring!

Just to summarize. There are 3 fixes for the problem:
  1. Re-solder the board
  2. Buy a new after market board
  3. Replace with LDD-300L driver (also can be soldered on driver board with 4 resistors and a BM04B-XASS-TF)

Do you have an opinion which one is more durable without causing problems to the led lights or the car?
