individual / special order color in US?

has anyone attempted this with the X3? is it even an option since its made in the US? I know some people have been able to special order colors for the M3 and BMW NA has to approve it. Also heard it now cost around $4500 (used to cost $2K).

My wife really wants a fire orange X3 and I was thinking of contacting a few dealers to see if it could be done but we aren't ready to buy yet. I would spend $2,000 in a heartbeat but $4500 seems a little steep. I mean does it really cost them $4500 to do a special color, does it even cost them half that?

Special color would be a pretty big deal on a line that doesn't usually spray that color. I'd expect to pay for that. If it's possible at all I'd guess it would have to be a color in use in the plant.

Lightbulb BMW Individual Colors

I was able to get a Individulal color on a order but in additon to the $2000 charge for the color at that time, I was required to pay in full for the car before they would accept the order (non refundable contract). As for the X3's, colors in use in the SC plant might be worth a try to get approval for, particularly with the availability of the X3 M Kit this spring.

Yes this would be my second option. But I think only the M version of the X5 and X6 have that option and those are made in Germany.

Looks like color options could be a made in the USA problem. I thought BMW had the whole "individual" campaign going on the X3. Looks no different then what we could always order... Just a faster turn around time.

Pretty much.

You could always have the car painted by a good shop. To have it done right is prohibitively expensive though. But it would be very unique!

Only the base engine models. The M versions are not made in the US and those have the unique colors.

I'm fairly certain that all X5 and X6 models are assembled in SC.

I stand corrected on M Models being made in the US, my dealer confirmed they are ALL made in the US (all x5 and x6 models) which gives me hope for special ordering a Monte Carlo blue X3. I just am not sure its worth $4500 if that is in fact the cost.

My wife and I saw a Monte Carlo Blue X5M at the dealer today ($100K sticker) and loved the color, wish they made that or the lemans blue with the M Sport package for the standard $550 upcharge

Currently no options to "individual" the X3s
Would have loved to go Interlagos Blue, but even with individual's you can only get certain colour not any colour you like.
Bamboo interior would have also been nice...

Yes and no. I am not talking about the Euro individual program. Special order can be anything you like but BMW NA has to approve it. Check out the M3s people have ordered. Fire orange, Dakar yellow, leguna seca blue...

They would charge you an extra premium cause you would think they would have to stop the current production to change the paint and stuff......

Found this post which provided a good summary about the Individual Program for the US Market.

Just because you will pay does not mean you will get an approved allocation. You can be denied several times for your requests, as I was denied more than 3 times for Estoril Blue, and may even be denied something that another person was approved for. As of my order date in April 2009, Individual interiors/leathers were not available for purchase as they "have not been tested for the US market". It is my belief, however, that the cost would be prohibitive for many people. If the jump in price of individual/special order paint is any indication, from MSRP $2000 (2006) to MSRP $5000 (2009), then one would expect a huge cost for any sort of special interior. In 2006, individual leather interior was roughly $3800. This did NOT include the leather dash, console, floormats, and individual wood trim.

Hope this helps!

///MyK

Edit: Invoice on S.O. paint is $4550.

I think it would be very difficult to get a color that isn't already in the X5 Individual palette, especially how backed up X3 orders seem to be. Also, I don't think it's possible to get an M color on a non-M vehicle.

Worth trying though...
Might try to get piano black trim too.

I'm not sure black trim is possible. The trim isn't painted, it's manufactured. That would be a tall order.

You can go third party though.
