It takes all of 6 seconds to change from a flat sheet into the "box". I'd rate the whole cargo tray a 4.5 on a scale of 5. the only minor "down-side" is that the design covers half of the right side "cubby-hole" that otherwise was the perfect place to hold a half-gallon milk bottle on the way home from the grocery store.

If you're not in a big hurry, you might want to wait a month or two for WeatherTech to produce their design for the F25. Their "cargo liner" for the pre-2011 X3 was an excellent device, and probably a better fit then the BMW part.

Here's what it looks like with the "box" flattened and then folded in place.
if only the box could fit a spare tire

Hey thanks, I'm actually going to look at this exact tray tomorrow, they got it on hold for me, so I'll probably pick it up.

Thanks for the heads up on that, Lotus...I was curious of the same thing for my dog when I order my X3. Also, thanks for posting the pictures!

I have rather unique cargo necessities, since I am a technical diver and need to be able to transport a lot of gear to and from dive sites (where it's wet on the way back). My approach was to get the cargo cover to protect against water, and to build a much more solid platform on top of it to protect the cargo area from the abuses of loading and unloading dive gear. I find the bumper cover is very practical since things can scrape past the bumper when moving gear in and out (see pictures below).

Here's the finished product:

The 'front' view:

As you can see, everything is set up with sturdy hinges, so it can all be collapsed when storing in my garage.

With some stages:

And finally with a set of double tanks in the back:

These are all held in place with rubber straps, and don't move even on bumpy roads.

So far I've been happy with the cargo liner as a protector.

Nicely implemented solution for your diving hardware. The only thing you could have done to improve it would have been to make it out of BMW spec. "Fineline Siena Wood", but that's a very special order at your local Home Depot.

I checked. Home Depot doesn't have it in stock.

What’s shipping for a chunk of wood from Siena?

Cool, thanks for posting, I just picked up the cargo liner today. I too have unique cargo necessities. The reason I got an X3 was to have something somewhat sporty and nice to drive, but also a car I could haul all my stuff. My last car got shredded from hauling equipment around. I'm gonna be much more careful now with liners, cases etc... love this car too much to trash it.

I leave this friday morning on a small trip for several days that will get my car past the break in for sure, this will be the first time I fully load up the X3... will post pics of the fully loaded cargo space if I get a chance.

Shaderman, what liner do you have for the main bed floor with the rear seats folded?

It's just a thick rubber 'carpet' that I bought at a local Home Depot. It was in rolls, so I bought 3 pieces big enough to cover both seats down, or left or right seat down with enough extra to tuck into the cargo cover.

I have the "Universal Protector" in the X5 and have ordered one for the X3. Not fancy, and not a custom fit, but easy and versitle. Flips down easily to protect the bumper, and is light enough that it can be rolled or folded up and out of the way. I like rubber protectors in general, had them in previous vehicles - but having to hold it up every time you want to access the under-floor compartments is a PITA, not to mention they completely cover the sliding tie-down system.

But, that's why they make several variations - because we don't all need or want the same solution.

WeatherTech now has a F25 cargo liner listed on their web site at:

http://www.weathertech.com/store/mvp...1140&Year=2011

(I think they may need to update the picture though)

I already bought the BMW "bumpy" cargo liner (with special box!) a while ago, but would be interested in hearing about the WeatherTech product if anybody gets one.

I don't think I'd buy a $100+ liner without seeing a picture of it first. That is not an X3 illustrated.

I got the BMW approved rubber boot liner today. Cost me £57 at the dealer (with a small discount) overall I am quite happy with it but to be honest why on earth did they design it such that it obscures the cubby hole on the right hand side of the trunk? Jeez, even the small insert on the left (that houses the warning triangle, locking alloy key, first aid kit and tool kit (UK car) is not accommodated. The profile you would think would be tailored at least to fit snuggly. Seems like a half finished job.

But overall, the fit aside I think it will do the job well. Not sure about that small box mind you...cant see what on earth I would put in it but time will tell.

Has anyone got the weathertech liner yet? I would like to hear how it fits and the quality of it. My dad has one for his car (different car) and it fits very well with decent quality and I wanted to see if the X3 fit was the same.

Just ordered a set of the DigitalFit liners and cargo mat from Weathertech.com. I'll make sure to post a little review when they arrive.

I have the dimpled rear protecter. I've looked at the DigitalFit liners because they cover the transmission hump in the rear seat area.

Not a tray per se, but I ended up deciding on a Canvasback liner which goes all the way up the back of the seats. I need to vacuum the heck out of the carpet today prior to installing. If anybody wants photos let me know though it will be a black liner on black carpet, and I'm a crap photographer. fair warning.
