Moonroof: Anyone experience any issues?
Took delivery of my X3 yesterday. This is my 5th BMW and the 3rd with the Panorama Moonroof (E91 and E70) so I'm very familiar with it. Yesterday I vented the roof (tilt position) and when I tried to close it later, it would not close. It started down, and then abruptly reversed and stayed open.
Had this once with my sunroof in one of my BMW's (forget which) and had to clear some debris that had blown into the track, but when I checked it was as clean as the day it was built (less than a week ago). So, I figure this must be related to the pinch protection "feature". After about a dozen tries off and on, it finally closed. Now I'm paranoid to open it again. I also noticed that only the front glass panel tilted open. In the X5 and our previous E91 both glass panels tilt open... has BMW changed this for the X3 moonroof or do I have a function of the mal variety? Owner's manual doesn't specify...

I haven't taken delivery of my 35i M Sport yet, but I do recall when I test drove an X3 with Panorama the CA told me the second panel is fixed. I'm disappointed that BMW decided not to offer the dual tilt feature for the X3. I also will also miss the split sunshade venting that my E53 X5 had. The X3 vents from the front. The sun shade slides back a couple of inches when the shade is closed and the roof is tilted up. The E53 with Panorama would split the shade in the middle with a wind screen in the opening.
I hope that your closing issue was a one-off occurrence and doesn’t happen again. Good luck. |

Thanks guys. Hopefully a one-time occurance. I did RTFM that there is a bypass for the pinch protection, where holding the button past resistance will override. Will try that if it happens again.

The UK brochure says both panels tilt. No doubt an "error".

There is a whole thread dedicated to the nonsense printed in the UK brochure
http://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showth...rochure+errors Mind you, this is nothing compared to the total nonsense the dealers come out with

When I did my test drive, I played with the sunroof and only the front tilted open. The back was stationary. Keep us posted if it acts up again!

I am a huge sun roof user so I'm going to be really bummed if it is always acting up! Please let us know what the fix is when you find out!

I haven't experience any problems with the moonroof yet, just an issue with the passenger airbag which I'm going to get fixed Saturday.
What I really don't like about the moonroof is the fact that on the side closest to the front windshield a plastic part with a net attached to the bottom of it pops up when you open the moonroof. It's very noisy when driving around and I have no idea which genius at BMW decided that it's a good idea to drag around a fine net at 40 mph. Apart from wind noise it's not very attractive either, it looks out of place and I've been debating if I should just cut the net off. |

I think sometimes the pinch protection can do funny things. While we were driving home from PCD recently the rear passanger side window refused to go up. After numerous presses of the switch on the dirvers door it finally went up. Haven't had it happen since.

Agree. I know I was in motion during at least several of my attempts to close it - and it sounds like you were driving when you had the window problem. I supposed the buffeting air could engage the pinch protection.

Okay - happened again yesterday. As I was pulling into the garage I tried to close the roof and it wouldn't close. Having read the manual on this, I tried holding past the resistance point and keeping pressure there for a few seconds to override the pinch protection. That worked, and it closed.
If this is how sensitive the control is going to be, it's going to be a pain in the ass.
