rear driver side door wont open from inside

I love my X3, but recently when I arrived somewhere, my son was unable to open the rear driver side door. I tried pressing the button inside the car to open, but nothing.. I tried the remote, but nothing.. All I can think is that maybe it is a child safety lock.. I don't know how to change it though! Any ideas? I called roadside assistance and they didn't know.
I would appreciate any information as to how to fix it.

Make sure the switch in the door is set properly.
