Vibration at speed

Let me preface this by saying that I am not on the stock Goodyear LS2s. I replaced those at the time of purchase with Pirelli P-Zero Nero A/S and the Goodyears are in storage until lease turn in.

After replacing the tires, I noticed a vibration in the vehicle at speeds of 75-80 MPH. I took the vehicle back to the Discount Tire I bought the tires from and had them take a look. They rebalanced the two rears. Took the X3 out on the interstate, same vibration at 75-80. Went back, had them rebalance all 4 this time. Took the X3, vibration still there. So this time, I went to a different DT, they stripped all the weights, started from scratch, and even rotated the tire on the rim for 2 of the tires. Just took the X3 out, and guess what, vibration is still there. It is a weird vibration, though, because it sometimes disappears completely. But when it is there, it is very noticeable (passenger seat/headrest visibly shaking). At this point, I am thinking it is an issue with the tires, but I was assured they weren't out of round or anything, just that the wheels/tires were heavy and tough to balance. Anyone else experience this, whether it is with the stock tires or not?

Sounds like you may need "Tire Road Force" balancing.

Just curious....did you get to drive it when the runflats were on at that same speed? Were there any vibrations then? You could always put the runflats back on just to see if you still get the same vibration and if you do, then you know it isn't the tires.

I did once, on the interstate on the way home from picking it up from the dealer. The new tires went on the next morning. I don't recall a vibration, which makes me think this is the tires. Discount Tire is looking into my options at this point, but I wanted to see if anyone with the stock setup noticed any vibration at these speeds.

That's the point of "road force" balancing. Diagnose tire problems beyond normal balancing under close to real world conditions.

My stocks are smooth from day one.

It's not uncommon to get a bad tire or two. If they are using the Hunter 9700 road force balancer, it can diagnose them. If the tires produce a road force reading greater than about 30 lbs, they will need to be replaced, as no amount of balancing will cure the vibration. Most likely one or two of the tires are not round within spec, or have other issues.

Your tires might be out of round. I had that problem on a car once. Road force balance should be able to catch that, but worth asking them to check for it.

Thanks for the thread TN_3. As it happens I'm also replacing the OEM runflats with conventional Pirelli when I take delivery this week. Mine are a little different (Scorprion Zero asimmetrics) and I wont be doing the speeds you were doing, but its something I will watch out for.

I look forward to hearing the resolution of your problem. I have a similar issue with my '11 335i. Long story short: replaced 2 wheels, road-force balanced twice (indy and dealer). And like yours the vibration sometimes isn't there. My vibration tends to occur around 80mph. But here's the kicker: they gave ma a loaner -- also a 2011 335i, but a 4 door, not a cp like mine. Had only 460 miles on it but it too had a similar high-speed vibration. I'm thinking it's in the suspension. Like you I had replaced the run-flats, but with DWS's in my case. Good luck.

Well, I took the X3 back to DT this morning. They had ordered two new Pirellis and were going to replace the two tires with the highest road force with the new tires. Everything was rebalanced, and I took the X3 back out on the highway...vibration, while improved, was still there at 75-80. The manager of the DT rode with me, and he noticed it too, but agreed with me that it is very minor and is probably just an issue with these tires and this vehicle. He stated that the wheels were very heavy, and that the lighter Pirellis (as opposed to the heavy OEM RFTs) might be causing the mild vibration that isn't felt with the stock tires. He said it took a lot of weight to road force balance these wheels/tires. At this point, there isn't much I can do. They have been rebalanced 5 times and I've had two of the tires replaced, so it looks like this is just an issue with these tires I'm going to have to live with if I want to keep them.

Maybe they'll smooth out after a few hundred miles. I wonder though if "cupping" could be a problem in the future if they don't. Just a thought.

tn3,

I wonder if your vibration at speed issue could be caused by this?

Hmmm, that is interesting...I might mention that to my SA. The report date of the SB, Sept. 2010, is a little odd.

Did BMW replace the rims or did you have to out of your own pocket?

the rims were out of round . we did everything to correct the problem. it wasn't untill the sun hit the rims that you could see the slight out of round problem.i bought wheel protection /tire when i bought the car. the dealer put the wheels /tires through under the warranty.that took care of the vibration.however i have a tracking broblem .have been back for that5 plus times. got it right last mo;thantook the car back this week for inspection. got it back and now i have the tracking problem again. this is wearied.hope this gives you some direction to take. best of luck charlie k

Same here, I have a 2011 BMW 5 series which had 4 bent (out of round rims) from the factory that was causing a bit of vibration despite road force balancing, etc. BMW really needs to get their act together because there are quite a bit of BMW owners who just purchased their cars and had vibration due to bad tires or rims. This is ridiculous for a luxury brand. Glad to hear that everything is being sorted out properly.
