Breaking in

It's a bit too late for me, just passed 1200 miles.

But I can't help thinking that although I pretty much adhered to the user guide parameters, that my tendency to accelerate quickly might not be the best for the break in period.

In retrospect I wonder if driving the car in Eco mode might have been a really good way of giving the car a nice smooth and gentle break in...

Too late for me ... But maybe drive your new x3 in Eco mode for the first 1200 ...

I asked the dealer about break in when picking up mine. He told my not to worry and just step on it if so desired but not to exceed 130 km/h for longer periods the first few weeks... Broken in at the factory was the explanation. I actually asked twice to be sure but got the same answer. I still drive a little careful though, just rounding 500 miles or so right now.

Your 35d is probably quicker than most things on the road even when it's Eco mode!

Broken in at the factory?! Interesting. I would ignore your dealer (except his 130km/h remark) and go by what's in the manual, different models vary but here's an example and some threads with other people's comments on break-in period

Agree. I have chosen to stick to the manual and the experience shared by you guys in this forum. It was an interesting remark from my dealer anyway, since he is supposed to know.

I just "drove" my car normally including some hard acceleration from day one. I guess my car will die the day after the warranty expires.

Ehhhh..I think you have to take this stuff with a grain of salt. 1-how many of us plan on driving over 100mph, 2-what 'really' can happen if we accelerate hard during the first xxxx miles.

This reminds me of a Triumph the Insult Dog skit, where he was doing the weather on a local Hawaii news station. 'OH NOOOO LIGHT WINDS!!! ITS ARMAGEDDON FOR HAWAII!!!'

Well, they do drive on rolls at the factory. Acceleration to 100 mph or something like that.

About mine: I drove almost 99% to manual instructions and now after 12 000km on the clock, service is due 22 000km, and front pads are estimate to last 90 000km and rear pads 70 000km.

Yes, please see this image:

I have now 12 000km on the clock and when I had the delivery, it said 50 000km to change. So it has increased indeed. Probably because I drive so gently

Interesting, I have a different display for brake wear... I'll post a picture later.

I checked my car and it does have the same menu screen... I just didn't click the iDrive to the right.

My car has 5300kms and the OBC indicates my brakes require replacement at 39,000km.

I don't know how your virtually identical car could have twice as much brake pad from the factory.

Maybe BMW uses harder brake compound on the the European cars.

Does your car have "performance control"?

Quote:
BMW Performance Control.

No two journeys are identical: in a curve, the outer wheels have a longer path than the inner. BMW Performance Control takes on this challenges and uses it to create a more dynamic driving experience by controlling each wheel individually.

In modern automobiles, the wheels on an axle are connected by a differential – a special gear that adjusts for this difference in length. BMW Performance Control takes this individual control a step further by changing engine output and if necessary applying braking force: the outer wheels get greater drive power, the inner less, and all four can engage with maximum traction. The BMW X3 literally drives into the curve, for an even greater sense of dynamic driving and excelling stability.

I do have the Performance Control, it was optional here and I paid for it.

As said, when I received the car, it was 50 000km (or 60 000) on the OBD. Now, as I have done 12 000km, the distance has increased.

So it must be that OBD calculates the distance to be covered from various values (how many brakings, how hard, how often, etc.). I have manual gears and I drive moderately, I use the engine to slow me down, not brakes. I like to think that if I have to brake I have done a mistake

I aim to get my full allocation or brake replacements under my 5 year maintenance plus plan.

If I'm not braking I'm not having enough fun!

Odometer hit 1000 miles on the way home last night - just another 180 or so to go before the beast can be unleashed!

The driving modes are probably irrelevant for breaking-in period. What does the manual say?

Usually full throttle should be avoided as should constant RPM. The latter causes glazing of the bores, causes more oil consumption and reduced engine performance.

Best to use the engine's performance as much as possible once the oil is up to temp, vary the RPMs and avoid full throttle. Then gradually build up the max RPM every 500 or so miles.
