I went diesel!! - New X3 xdrive28d

I've been driving variants of the 35 engine for 6 years, first with a 2009 335i and more recently with a 2012 X3 xDrive35i and have loved the confident power and smoothness of this engine. As my lease was ending on my 2012, I started getting interested in the new diesel and like many on the forum had hoped that the larger 3.0 version would become available to us North Americans. I didn't think I could tolerate the less powerful 4-cyl 2.0 model after having driven larger engines for so long.

So, a local dealer had a very well equipped 2015 xDrive28d available and I decided to try it out. I must say that I was really surprised. It is almost as torque-y as the 35i and while it is not quite as smooth as the 6, I actually liked the sound and feel of the car. Driving around the 'burbs, at least, I haven't felt the least bit underpowered. Maybe I'm just getting old, but the opportunity for 30+ MPG in an SUV really appealed to me, and I decided to buy it.

Got a great deal on it as it had been used by the dealer for a month or so.

Here is what it came with:

2015 X3 xDrive28d
Black Sapphire Metallic
Black Nevada Leather
X Line
Cold Weather Package
Driver Assistance Package
Driver Assistance Plus
w/ ACC Stop&Go
Dynamic Handling Package
Lighting Package
Premium Package
Navigation
Parking Assistant
Harmon Kardon
Enhanced BT

Sticker was 59,400 - purchase price was 51,988!

After 3 days, I'm really enjoying the car, but I'm leaving on a weekend trip and will provide some more driving impressions soon.

Here are a few pics!

Mine was special ordered, since I wanted specific options/color choices that I probably wouldn't have found just looking around. My MSRP was lower than this, and my purchase price higher.

Blue just isn't as popular as the whites/blacks/silvers.

Compared to my 6 cylinder G35, it feels slow. And, of course, a little more tippy when taking a curve at speed. But not enough to be a real issue. Especially once I got through the break-in period and was more willing to use the foot feed.

I have a road trip coming up. I'll see how it handles on the 2 lane highways. Performance is always nice when passing, especially if you see a car coming at you.

Congratulations!

Sure you will enjoy the pleasant mix of torque and economy.

Looking forward to your notes after your trip - it may well be one of the 1'st user reports on said model.

I hope you get the 6cyl diesel in the US soon.
I've got the 30d, and I would have thought it ideal for the US market.
Good economy when you need it, lots of low rev torque, fast when required.

Edit: just saw that it's a month old

That is a beautiful automobile. I much prefer the X-Line trim over the boy racer M Sport.

Very nice looking car and good that you like the performance of the diesel. I came from a straight 6 petrol to 4 pot diesel and although not as smooth and quiet, I have not found it lacking in torque and performance.

Rather interested to see that your car has a single exhaust as the 2.8 (2.0) versions in the US normally have the twin tail pipe. In the UK and Europe they are all single tail pipe!

Weekend update

Well, I drove about 250 miles over the weekend, and while the X3 diesel will definitely not be mistaken for the 35i, my initial impressions were confirmed: the diesel can definitely hold its own, and the torque makes up for much of what it lacks in horsepower. I was driving on the highway comfortably at 80mph (that is when traffic will allow -- the ACC is very nice - just set the speed and vehicle spacing and take your foot off the gas).

The only situation that I'm not so sure of would be passing quickly on a 2-lane road. I didn't have any such situations yet, but my sense is that it won't be passing as confidently as the 35i.

The other factor that was very nice is that I've averaged 31 mpg overall while driving pretty normally (i.e. not trying to be super-frugal at all). I didn't check just the highway part, but I guesstimate that it would probably have been around 34 mpg. Next time, I'll enable the ECO Pro Analyzer and collect the data.
