This may sound counterintuitive but there will soon be a rear-wheel drive (non xDrive) X3, built in Spartanburg, but not sold in the U.S.

Do they offer similar RWD variants for the X5/X6? If they sold this X3 in North America it would compete with MB's GLK non4matic version.

No. This AFAIK is the first X without X.

I'm sure it will be a popular choice here in the UK where CO2 emissions come into play and AWD isn't really a necessity in most areas, however I personally think its a lot of weight for an engine of that displacement to move around (even if there is a weight advantage of loosing the AWD drivetrain).

I think you'll find the 1.8D is a detuned 2.0D like in the 3 series.
