Broken Charge Pipe Club 35i

Well, that's a bummer. Bought our 2014 X3 35i 3 months ago with 29,000 miles. Heading out to Moab, Utah Saturday afternoon from Columbia, Missouri. Pulled out to pass a slower vehicle at about 3/4 throttle to make sure I was going to clear another vehicle heading up behind us in the left lane and there was a monstrous POP and huge power loss. My first thought was that the transmission just ate it because it was so jerky and violent. I drove about 3 miles to the next exit and had it scanned. MAF errors, so now I'm thinking turbo failure. We had to drive a bit further before I could really look at it. Thanks to this forum, I zeroed in on the charge pipe. Bingo. Creative use of zip ties is holding the pipe back upon the thottle body pretty well. I am gonna have to limp it to a independant BMW shop about 40 miles away on Wednesday because I'm literally vacationing in a ghost town in Utah. I say Limp, but it actually drives fine, I just need to keep my foot out of it. I do not have time for the shop to order a strong aftermarket pipe so we're just going OEM. I just have no choice at this time. I may replace it later myself and sell the OEM pipe. Anyways, just thought I'd chime in. Hopefully, this will be the last problem with it for a good while.

Geez, your mileage is quite low to have that happen. Good ole zip ties, I think they're a cousin to duct tape Did you get any sort of warranty three months ago? That should be covered.

I was very surprised it went at such low miles. Nope, no warranty. Bought from an older gentleman in Florida. It's all good, just need it fixed. I've got to think the higher altitude and the fact that it was 104 degrees when it occured contributed to it. Still a bummer though. The independant BMW shop said it's an easy quick replacment but I'm not sure they understood mine is AWD. Looks to be a tight fit to get it out of there. We'll see how it goes.

Zip ties...what an amazing tool.

2 questions; 1, Were you able to pass the car after the charge pipe blew? 2, Is your name MacGyver?

Haha! Yes and maybe. My wife called me that after the “fix.” You’d be amazed at what a 7-11 in the middle of the desert has for tools, honestly. I keep my travel tool kit in my Tundra so had nothing on me. The BMW didn’t seem like it needed a big tool kit, but it will from now on. Of course, since these tools were purchased at a convenience store they were crazy overpriced, so they gave me a free soda and free coffee.

That does look like a MacGyver tool kit!

Thanks, I've had an 73, 84, 02Z06, 08Z06, and a 16Z06. They are a lot of fun.

Got it fixed. Great Euro shop in Grand Junction, CO. They saved my bacon and the mechanic commented he was impressed with my “repair.” Ha!
