steering
The X3 2.8i is my first BMW. I love the way the car rides and handles but when on long highway rides at 80mph the steering seems heavy and very sensitive. Not a relaxing way to drive. is this normal for a BMW or is it more pronounced in an suv.

No that doesn't sound normal.
Have you checked your tire pressure lately?

What was your previous car? I do find the steering on a BMW to have a different feel that took me a little while to get used to. My last "other" experience was a Lincoln SUV as a rental. On the freeway, in particular, the steering on that felt very light to me. Little effort to move and little change in direction for fairly large movements. The BMW felt tighter or heavier to me. More resistance for small movements and it changed direction sooner with a smaller movement. In case that happens to match what you're experiencing . . .

I truly don't even know I'm going 80 when I'm going 80 half the time. My X3's have been the nicest handling SUV's I've ever owned.

The standard steering is a bit heavier than an average car, but those of us who owned previous BMWs know that the X3's steering is somewhat light by BMW standards. The dynamic handling package adds weight and feel to the steering. Regarding it being too heavy on the highway, that doesn't sound normal, but I think you're just not used to it yet.

Do you drive in "sport" mode a lot? Sport mode makes the steering feel significantly heavier, a little more than I'd like. I bet that's a parameter that could be adjusted by coding.
