UK 3.0d vs 2.0d

Auto v auto
258 v 184hp
6.2 v 8.5 0-62
47.1 v 50.4 combined mpg
159 v 147 co2
6 cyl v 4cyl
Avail July del? V avail del now?

Pricing in the extras on the 3.0d, worth the extra ~£4000 for the above? Reason I ask is only a few seem to have order the 3.0d - so far. The 2 may be the bigger seller as cheaper but if affordable, is the 3 worth it?

I think that the power and the sound are the two main reasons to go for the 3 liter. And have you seen the torque? 380 vs. 560 NM!

The two engines are totally incomparable. The 2 litre ain't bad, but above 70 mph there isn't much power left. The 3 litre on the other hand has got loads of torque so enough power to do a quick overtake.

If I could have afforded the 3 liter the choice would be very simple.

When you lease the car the difference will be quite big as maintenance & tax will add some extra pounds on the monthly leasefare.

If you can afford/willing to pay running costs go for the 3ltr

Im happy with the performance of my E60 520d so for the same performance to 20d is a no brainer for me

Does your 520d power taper off at 70mph too?

How much power do you need after 70mph? We cant expect same response at all speeds from a 20d (520d doesnt cause me any problems - I suppose your learn to drive to the engines strengths and weaknesses)

Hi,

I too had some concerns for the power in the 20d at first, but after test driving it for a couple of days, I'm quite convinced that the power is fully sufficient for a daily driver small SUV. Yes, it's not blistering quick, but then again that type of car doesn't have to be. At first, I had my dealer out my order on "watch", to see if we should change to a 30d once the official price had been released. But, since mine is a company car, the price difference was just too big. I could fit the 30d, but with very few options, and I didn't feel that was the right prioritization on the X3.

I honestly felt the 520d much more "underpowered", as it's a car type that begs to be driven in a completely different manner.

As for power, I would expect a manual X3 to feel significantly more sluggish, since the auto will downshift even at motorway speeds, which one normally doesn't do on manuals. Well, I do, but I'm childish... Also, the auto will utilize the fairly narrow power band of the 20d much more efficiently, resulting in quicker acceleration in most normal world driving situations.

When I test drove the X3, I thought it felt quite OK up to 150-160, which is fine for our conditions (and our speed limits...). Sure, my current car easily cruises at 200 km/h for long extended periods, but that just means that I often drive at those speeds, which is not very driver's licence compatible...

I'll also be upgrading the software as soon as possible (after a short break-in period), which should give that extra ooompphh. 215-220 hp/450-460 Nm should be a quite different drive.

Karl

True! I'm a bit spoiled with the Volvo T5 I currently drive; always loads of power available.

I'm sure I will appreciate the 2.0D engine!
