Using A/C Condensation As I/C Spray

Today I was doing my regular 2000 mile oil change and saw a large puddle of water from the A/C. This got me to thinking...

I would have to locate where exactly the A/C condensation drips from and rout it into some sort of tank underneath the car. Near the top of the tank I would have to drill a hole so that if the tank is full the water will drip out as it normally would. I would have to drill a hole in the bottom of the tank and connect some sort of small electrical water pump and hose to get the water to flow to the front of the car and spray on the FMIC.

I dont think this would be a very difficult thing to do and seems very efficient, especially in FL where the A/C is almost always running and the car is always heat soaking. Ideally I could use a tank big enough where I could store enough water to use while running the 1/4 mile and not have to use the A/C

I think the challenges of this would be:
1. Finding a place to mount a tank big enough.
2. How I would turn on the spray, thinking about using the Kick-Down switch or using a dead button on the climate control panel
3. What I would use to do the spraying. Garden sprinkler of some sort?

I did a rudimentary google search and it seems this is not a poplar thing to do, Why is that? Not as efficient as I think? Hard to install? Am I just dumb?

Any advice or pointers would be greatly appreciated!
All going well, I want to make a YouTube video of this install to help any of you folks if you decide to do this as well.

This... Is ambitious but I don't think it's going to be worth the effort. Going to be difficult to get a uniform spray across much of the intercooler due to the packaging constraints of our engine bay. You'd also run out of water really quickly.

I think it'd be marginally more expensive to do an actual meth injection setup that sprays in the chargepipe and has a controller attached.

I will eventually do WMI but I currently do not want that clutter in the engine bay, once I do PS2 it is in the plans.

I am sure i'd go through water quickly but also the A/C is constantly running and I would not rely on it. I just want this to help with heat soak after pulls.

I think I will use 2 little garden sprinklers and get a decent spray on it, wont break my heart if its not uniform.

I'd take a look at misting systems used for outdoor air cooling in the West and Southwest to spray the water. (Just google "misting systems") Create it with a reservoir of its own and used condensation from the AC system to supplement the reservoir. That might be a workable system.

That looks like it would work perfectly! I think 5L/min may be too much and would drain the tank almost instantly. Thank you for the idea! I'll start looking at things similar to that

Use a washer pump with a misting nozzle. Subaru did this for intercooler spray back in 2001 through 2007 on the STI. Washer pump in a tank in the trunk run up to what was basically a windshield washer nozzle. Works perfectly. Depending on how often it was used the .5L tank of water would last a month.

I had this idea too for my turbo Volvo. I bought brass nozzles from eBay and was planning on making a t off the windshield washer tube. I need to source a small 12v electrical valve which is normally open to keep water from spraying Windshield when activated. This is optional really as you can get a clean windshield when boost hits🤙

Seriously, just buy this along with a couple washer spray nozzles from any auto parts store and wire it to a switch. Chores done.

If you want to get fancy you can wire it to a 3 second momentary switch to have it run for 3 seconds then turn off.

Went to advanced auto today and bought a windshield washer fluid pump and it looks to work perfectly. Also I used a 2L Coke bottle just to see what would fit and it seems to fit pretty good up in there plus 2L of intercooler spray!

Now just to wire and plumb everything up

Cool idea, just upgraded my intercooler and haven't driven in the summer yet with it, so not sure how much it'd help here. But definitely let us know how it goes and how you decide to activate it

Had an idea that might make this more seamless (though, you'd lose full control of it without a secondary circuit).

I'd see about tapping into the vacuum line that runs back to the exhaust flap actuator as an on/off switch. Might add a bit more engineering complexity, but would activate the spray whenever the car opens the flap.

I'm contemplating this now too, there's a lot of room behind the bumper to accommodate a legit spray setup.

If you spray water in the intercooler, it will exhaust under the car aft if the bellypan. If the rear tires ran over the water at full throttle it wouldn’t be a good thing.

A good majority of the water would evaporate - that is how it cools the intercooler. It uses evaporative cooling. Also I would likely would not use this system during a pull, only after to reduce heat soak and be ready for the next pull.

I appreciate the thought and concern.

I'm sure you will be fine. I just wanted to point out that the dripping water aspect is why these devices aren't allowed on any type of racetrack.

Mocked up and it worked! The drip filled the bottle I used in about 10 minutes at moderate AC temps. Proof of concept is done, now just to fit the tank and plumbing to the car.

Currently using a toggle switch to us the spray, open to better and more convenient ideas.
