Steering clunk???

Just got a new X4, was a pre reg from April 17 with 50 miles on the clock.

I have noticed the steering is making a quiet clunk/knock sound when turning right or when moving slowly if I pull down fairly sharply on the wheel to the right, or aggressively move the wheel up and down whilst moving slowly.

It's pretty faint, can't hear with the windows down or with radio on.

Has become pretty cold here recently, not sure if that's a coincidence or not....

Doesn't do it with the engine off which is what I've seen commonly.

It's a 35d m sport but I doubt that makes any different. I know it's an x4 but likely the same rack as on other diesel bmws.

Any ideas?? Is this normal, something to be concerned about? Back to dealer or just monitor to ensure it doesn't get worse?

New to you or "new-new"? Mileage?

If it is "new to you" only, I would suspect the transfer box.

Happens when weather turns cold.

From Porsche forum: "Perfectly normal consequence of wide tires and caster angle. Happens going forwards too, which is why tires squeal so easily turning in a parking garage. But its much worse going backwards. Anyway, absolutely nothing to worry about."

My X4 does it as well. Freaks you out the first time. Worse on my 911.

Search "acorn" effect. Ask your service advisor.

Why would it do it when turning right and not left. I'm not so sure it's normal.

Don't know that one. May be caster and bushing differences. Worth checking out. Good luck and let us know the outcome.

There's an adjusting nut on the steering rack that can be tightened that will eliminate the issue. I think it's in the F30 forum somewhere. It controls friction tolerances in the rack. Snug it down, and viola!

Don't think it's the rack, tech guy seemed to think front diff but we shall see. They are having the car for a week in a couple of weeks so hopefully they will sort it out.

I went through the same shit, they changed a bunch of suspension bushings, control arms, sway bar, then they changed the steering shaft (connecting the steering wheel to the rack)... still persisted.. eventually they gave in and replaced the rack! Voila! 8 months of happiness since the replacement!

Complain enough until they fix it!!! BMW steering racks are ridiculous prone to this shit

I’ve had 2 rack replacements. It comes back after some time. As short as 3 months and as long as 9 months. I don’t get why because my coupe doesn’t have this issue , so what is the design difference that causes it? Who knows. I thought it was solved on the newer models but I guess not. I tend to drive it as aggressive as my coupe and always in sport mode.
