Would never consider a premium vehicle without one. Same with nav.

I wonder why they did this. In my 2009 X3, both panes tilted and opened. In my 2012 X3, only the front one tilts and opens. :-/

I did not order because of the cold. I have driven many cars with panoramic sunroof and when it is -30 Celsius out, the blind just isn't enough. One has to wear a hat not to freeze one's head. Especially with tall people this is unfortunate (head close to roof).

Other thing was that there is not that much "head room" with panoramic sunroof, again, problem with tall people.

Yet another thing was maintanance, a bit of misalign and it will leak in. Yet more electric things to go wrong. And of course COG and safety issues.

I didn't order a sunroof for a couple of reasons- mainly due to rattle/leak risk and not really ever wanting to open it (I have A/C to regulate the temp and can always open and close windows for fresh air, plus we only get suitable weather to do so about a week a year).

I would however love the option for a full fixed glass roof ala Mercedes and (shudder) Peugeot. This to me has the main advantages- looking cool and letting more light in, without the disadvantages- fixed so chance of rattles and leaks is minimised. My old man's 308 has this and it's beautiful.

That's something I miss not having the M-sport. Very nice.

Pros:
  • - makes huge difference to the light inside the car. Closing the blind immediately has a darkening and slightly claustrophobic effect, difficult to explain but always very noticeable if someone has closed the sunblind
  • - fresh air ventilation which is much quieter than having a window down a little and healthier than AC (depends where you are though!)
  • - looks premium, adds resale value

Cons
  • - very expensive for a hole and a piece of glass!
  • - could potentially go wrong although I've had no problems * with mine and no rattles
  • - extra work with window cleaner when cleaning the car
  • - if you hold the lock button on the key fob the mirrors fold first and then the sunroof closes and then the sun blind closes. If you only want to fold the mirrors and hold the lock button a fraction of a second too long the blind closes just a little. Repeat and the blind closes a little more etc etc. Annoying. I can press the lock button for the right amount of time but the wife holds it down too long and closes the blind partially. Would be nice to switch off this behaviour completely (the car not the wife)

On the headroom issue, I'm 6'3" and don't have a problem with headroom but I guess it depends on how high you position your seat

* i did have one strange issue with closing and re-opening that disappeared and didn't come back

I have this consistent annoying squeak from the sunroof especially audible when the shade is open. Dealer fixed it 3 times already, but after a day or two it starts again. It may be the dealer's fault, maybe there is a simple solution to it, in any case I have to drive the car with the shade closed most of the time . On the other hand, I believe it is a cool feature in the car making the interior more upscale (when shade is open and not squeaking of course), and on summer evenings it's fun when you open the roof .

Mine X3 comes standard with a sunroof whether I want it or not. So far, I have only opened it twice and not done so for the last 2 months. Might be a dumb question but shld I open it once a while just to ensure the mechanism don't get stucked?

I'd do it, too, just to make sure it's operating properly and get warranty repair should it be needed.

Surely BMW must have done roll-over test with sunroof to ensure safety.

How sure are we about this? AFAIK there is the IIHS roof crash test which involves pushing a metal plate into the roof, four times the weight of the car. Is the government's/BMWs testing as stringent? IIHS began this test a few years ago. I think the results for a car with a sunroof would be different as it should reduce its strength vs. standard. Sunroofs are probably likely to break and let debris into the car during a rollover as well.

Somewhat dated, but interesting test result pics here. Kia did poorly.

I have the sunroof. I have opened it about...twice .. once to see if it works...the other to listen for how noisy it is when open, and it's noisy as fuck. I never open it, nor the shade. I don't like the sun baking my head and arms. Just my 2c.

I'm ordering my x3 without the sunroof. I don't have one in my car now and the roof on my wife's car is never open. Most of the time the shade is pulled to reduce glare as well.

Plus the sunroof just adds weight to the wrong part of the car... others have already mentioned the potential for squeaks and leaks.

In the US, its all about resale. I've got it and rarely open it. I sometimes forget I have it since the shade is closed too.
