2011 2.8 towing capacity
I'm buying a boat one of these days - any idea of the towing capacity of a 2011 X3 2.8? Is it 3500 lbs or is it 5300? I've seen both numbers in various places.
Thanks, Mark |

Hi Mark;
What I've read on different sites is that the "official" number in the US is 3500. Although I have also scene the 5300 number as a conversion of the German limit from Kg to Lbs. If I were towing I would stick to the 3500 US number so as not to upset my insurance company. Also my OCD has kicked in. It's not 2.8 (Two Point Eight) it's 28i (Twenty Eight Eye). I know, I know. But someone had to say it.

Here in Europe my car can officially tow 2400 kg.
2400 kg = 5300 lbs I am not sure if it would be wise to tow 2400 kg - 5300 lbs. It seems a lot to me for these cars. I think the weight of the car is not enough for such a heavy trailer. I have a caravan that weighs 1500 kg (3300 lbs), and the car has no trouble with that on trips to Croatia and Italy with a lot of steep highways.

European vehicle tow ratings are always higher than the US because european trailers are set up with less tongue weight than US trailers. This makes the trailer more prone to sway than a US trailer but this is less of an issue because towing speeds are generally lower in Europe. |
