99% sure it is just a pocket press, always been a thing with BMW's but used to be the unlock button was more vulnerable and if held down in pocket all the windows would open, only sure way to stop it is to get a case

Does the boot open button still not work when you set to unlock drivers door only? I thought it was independent?
Yes you are correct it does still open doh! Just have to keep the key safe.

Rear Hatch Opens Randomly

I got my 2018 X3 in February of 2018. I have had chronic problems with the rear hatch opening. There have been numerous times that I have been in a mall of a store and come out to my X3 in the parking lot and the rear hatch is open. It has also happened many times in my garage where the rear hatch door gets pinned against the garage door. It's incredibly frustrating. My wife and I have owned 6 SUVs with key-fob enabled rear hatch release and this has never happened to any of our other SUVs. This is clearly a 2018 BMW X3 problem

Just returned from my dealer who successfully coded rear hatch to not open unless doors are unlocked.

Did they charge you for this change?

No charge and loaner each of the two trips. Actually waited the second time because they estimated only an hour.

I have this issue with my 2015 328 wagon.
This is not only a '18 X3 issue, it's a BMW issue.

I got nailed with this again today.
Car was in the garage and I was in a hurry and opened the garage door from inside the house, which I don't normally do.

The X3 hatch had been open and the garage door took it up with it. It pulled the hatch past the max limit and the actuator mounts shattered into pieces. It also pulled the rear of the headliner away and deformed it.

The hatch itself has a big dent on the bottom where it was in contact with the door hardware and there's some paint damage.

I filed an insurance claim because this looks like it might be a couple thousand in damage. Appointment for the estimate is on Thursday.

I should have had it coded to only allow hatch open when the car is unlocked.

This sucks.

Just an update....
The auto body place that my insurance company sent me to quoted me $2800 for the repair. They can salvage the trunk lid but everything else needs to be replace including the headliner.

I contacted BMW NA and told them what happened. A case manager called me yesterday and the followed up just now. They've agreed to reimburse me for the insurance deductible and are escalating it to their engineering group to follow up on that aspect.

My recommendation to anyone who has had their trunk open unexpectedly: CALL BMW IN YOUR REGION AND OPEN A CASE.

BMW NA is 1(800)831-1117

If we just complain and discuss among ourselves then nothing will get resolved. However, I suspect that the fact it took them less than 24 hours to agree to send me a check might indicate that this is something they're aware of, at least to some extent.

I remember whilst coding a few things on my F31 340i (with comfort access) that there was a setting within the coding which allowed the rear tailgate to be opened by the remote only after a "long" press, and the setting also allowed a choice of time for the long press, i.e. 1 second, 3 seconds, etc.

Is this not the case with the G01?
Or if it is, perhaps the long press setting isn't long enough by default?

The dealer can code for free- trunk opening from the key fob only when doors are unlocked.

This is a good safeguard against accidental opening.

Stylish and functional.

it could have been worse . . . X3 was parked in garage , Gdoor was down. Gdoor to X3 tailgate distance is 1 ft.
When the tail gate opened it went out against the G door, and the lower edge of the Tgate was then slightly above
a protruding hinge plate. THEN when she opened the Gdoor, the hinge went up grabbed the Tgate lip and bent it in, dug into
the paint and metal, and the BMW emblem.
The X3 weighing more than the door didn't move, but the Gdoor motor had other thoughts and kept pulling which
torqued the door out of the top track and bent them, also bent a couple panels, and 5 hinges were bent and cracked.

Didn't know there is NO over torque "auto stop" protection on a Gdoor motor while GOING UP ! ? (called mfg)
None on any model, going down yes, up.. no! it is what it is
Wow, that's weird.
I got a close call with my F15 X5 before and by holding down the tailgate, the motor stop on pushing up.

I have just ordered the M Performance key case Alcantara/carbon fibre. It has 20% off on the UK site at the moment.

That's what i have had fitted to my key since delivery.
No unexpected behaviours yet. And to be honest, with comfort access, i barely know what the key looks like since i just keep that case in my pocket!

TheGuac, is this the same problem you experienced? It happened on a snow day. https://youtu.be/sbHDwudL8so

Purchased two of these leather cases on Amazon ($13.99). They are soft padded on the outside and leather covered stiff cardboard or plastic on the inside. It would be very difficult to inadvertently press any of the buttons with your fob in this pouch. You'll notice from the attached pictures that the fob fits in with the silicone cover I already had still attached. The fit is a bit tighter on one of the cases. The leather case comes with a key chain and a clip mount attached. Both are fairly easy to remove if you wish (the chain is light gage, and the clip mount is a zinc alloy which I cut off with a pair of end cutting pliers)

Amazon link(There are some slightly lower cost cases from a different Amazon seller that may be the same product. Also there is another case with an external leather weave pattern which may have the same internal construction as the case I bought (from the same supplier)): https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Exclamation Random Hatch Opening while Parked

I have had my 2019 X3 M40 hatch open numerous times while parked, both in the garage and in parking lots. In one case I returned to the vehicle which was parked outside in a lot to find the hatch open and the back filled with snow....

In fact last night the hatch opened sometime after the vehicle was parked at 10:30PM and locked and 9AM the next morning.

The dealer has reprogramed the vehicle so that the hatch is not supposed to open when the vehicle is locked. However, that has not solved the issue.
Fortunately, the hatch has not opened while in operation.

Resurrecting this old thread... yesterday I was stopped at a traffic light and the rear hatch suddenly opened (and stuff from the back fell out into the road. Fortunately nothing breakable or valuable).

Neither me or my wife had hands near the key fobs. The car was in drive and not in auto-stop-start mode.

It looks like the only remedy in this thread is coding to only open the hatch when the doors are unlocked or get a fob cover. Anyone seen any other software fix? Ideally, the hatch should never be able to open when in Drive.

And the key was in your pocket?

I use the BMW key cover and it never happened to me.
