Anti theft?
Hello everyone,
I'm waiting for the delivery of an X3 35i and I was wondering what kind of anti theft people are using I'm using a lojack system on my car but my insurance broker told me VIN etching is enough... What do you use on your X3??? Thanks.

No need really...? X3 comes with a sophisticated alarm system. Detects door entry, veh motion as well as interior motion. With BMW Assist, you get GPS tracking.. That can track the vehicle..

Can theft be prevented? Dont know. Can you track your car? Yes.
If you are so much worried, Buy and wire an old iPhone inside your car at not so easily visible location. You will be able to track your car then from anywhere. |

When I bought my car, the dealer gave me a document certifying that the car has a system equivalent to Lo-Jack which qualifies it for the insurance discount for vehicle recovery (or something like that). As FX30K said, BMW Assist can track the location of the car and report it to authorities so no need to add another tracking system. I guess the next step would be to add The Club or similar device, but I don't think that those have proven to be very effective.

My CA also told me the the VIN etching would be the "cure all" as a theft deterrent but tell me how many thieves have even heard of this or would even look on the windshield before stealing the vehicle. Baloney!

Anybody actually getting the insurance (comprehensive) discount due to BMW Assist?

Both Geico and USAA are honoring the BMW Assist theft recovery feature on two different X3s. Liberty Mutual probably does because of their joint marketing with BMW.

Eh, if they're able to steal it I hope I never get it back. Not like this is a classic or something. Insurance can cut me a check and I can order a new one. Much better than dealing with whatever that jackass did with mine…
Good alarm systems are kind of funny, thieves really want your car and will DESTROY the interior to try and disable it. They end up doing more damage to the car without being able to steal it, and I'm left with having to repair it all. What a mess. |
