Retrofit paddle shifters to a '13 F25 35i pre LCI

I have a '13 F25 35i pre LCI with a heated sport steering wheel. I've received a heated Msport steering wheel with paddle shifters. I've researched this topic and found various suggestions from just coding to also having to hardwire all of which I guess is determined by what model X3 and included specific features. I look forward to guidance from someone who has actually done this mod with my specific model X3 from a sport steering wheel without paddles...

Hey, sorry to see that lack of replies on this thread. I googled a bit and found something that may be relevant to you.

Here's the link, it's not an X3 but I think it might be along the same vein anyways.

Any ideas on what it specifically takes to activate the M Sport steering wheel paddle shifters on a '13 F25 35i that originally had a Sport steering wheel without paddle shifters?

I would have thought someone else would have already done this mod. Any known specifics on what would be needed to activate the shift paddles on a '13 X3 35i with a newly installed M sport steering wheel w/ shift paddles? Thank you.

It looks as though wiring will need to be done as simply coding was not the answer. Still any input specific to the F25 would be appreciated...

Does anyone have the steering wheel wiring diagram for the F25. All other sources that I've looked at on how to do this does not specifically apply to the F25. Thank you.

At least one person on this forum has done this modification and produced quite a good write up with photos! Someone also fitted the sport wheel from an X4!

The mod is offered by BMW at a cost of approximately £650, which would probably equate to $650 as we pay more for all such things in the UK.

If I find the links to the aforementioned posts, I will let you know.

My dealership here in the States wouldn't do it and even acted as thought they didn't know how to find out how to do it. They certainly weren't willing to pass on the how too info. I had to say to the service writer that even if I went to your parts counter and ordered the wheel you still wouldn't do it? The answer was no BMW doesn't authorize retrofits. Crazy stuff... I'm in the process of having an indie tech attempt to do it.

Still has no one done this on this specific model X3 35i?
It appears that the wiring is there since there is detected electrical current when the paddles are activated. So is it just a coding issue? I've even followed shawnsherdan's coding suggestions to no avail...

Please, let's get this done. I will appreciate any help!

Is there a BMW Service Tech on this forum that has the ability to contact BMW tech resources to find out what specifically it will take to activate the steering wheel paddle shifter function if the electrical impulses are registering when the paddles are activated but no +/- shift changes? If it's only coding specifically what will it take? Thanks

Does anyone have access to BMW maybe as a Tech to ask BMW The Motor Company to specifically ask what steps are needed to complete this mode? Why is this so difficult? For example and considering cost as no object, if I wanted a BMW OEM rear view camera retro'd on my X3 I'm sure they would do it. The two local BMW Dealerships won't even look at it... Thank you!

How do you know the impulses are registering when the paddles are pressed?

Also I had emailed you some instructions a while ago. There are 2 bits of wiring. One of them may be missing.

Electrical impulses registered when paddles are moved using a diagnostic device plugged into OBD at BMW Indie shop.

Sorry for the late reply. You may need to code 2TB which is sports auto transmission. Also it may register the impulses if the wiring is done till the JBBF. But from there it needs to be done till the junction box in the engine bay. And from there till the transmission. Most probably the wiring will be present from the engine bay to the transmission, but the other 2 bits may not be.

2TB already done. What model X3 is yours and how is it equipped? Those parameters may make a difference as well. That is why I'm hoping someone with a X3 35i equipped liked mine has done this mod.

The wiring I've mentioned applies to all variants.

No, I haven't done any wiring yet. I wanted to exhaust all of the other options first including coding. Thanks for your reply I'll take a look.

Did you manage to make the paddles work? I bought the same wheel but I don't know how to make the paddles work, it needs wiring or only coding?
