two keys in the car
here's a situation:
driver and passenger both get in the car. both have keys in their pocket. who's key is recognized? first person in the car, I'd assume. what happens if the 1st person in (passenger) gets out. will the car stay running or will it shut off? will I have to reboot the car? I can't find this situation in the manual anywhere. |

The last key that unlocked the car is the active profile. You can press unlock on the other key and this will switch profiles (you don't need to get out or lock the car before unlocking it to switch profiles).
I think the check on proximity of the key only happens when you start the ignition so walking away with the engine running has no effect - but not sure on that last one!

that is weird that the car would stay running b/c when you go to actually start it the key has to be inside...I get that b/c of safety reasons and maybe the reverse it true of the shutting down...they don't want it shutting off if you do something stupid like drop it out the window or whatever... |

When both keys are in the car, it will retain the last profile used to start/unlock. If you are unsure and don't want to be halfway down the street before you realize it is set to your wife/husband's profile, you can lock/unlock before getting in. Driver's door unlock has preference and it will use that profile.
As for leaving the running car - if you stray far enough, a warning message will come up on the iDrive screen. I cannot recall whether it will threaten to shut down or not. But here's a question (I might test one of these days): Supposedly you should not be able to lock the key in the car with CA. I assume this would apply to the key with the active profile (not sure if it would apply to both). But then again, if you DO lock the key in the car, the key is.... IN the car and it should unlock when you touch the handle. Sounds like a foolproof system right? Wrong - if that is true, and you did lock your key in the car - ANYONE could unlock it. :| The problem with proximity triggered devices like this, of which there are more than one... is that it does pose a number of challenges.

Speaking of active profiles ... is there a way to force both keys to use the same profile? I use both keys at different times, and have to manually switch the profile in the menus when I use the 'wrong' key. It would be great if I could somehow bind both keys to the same profile.

Leave one key in the car and lock with the other. Works. Remove the outside key from the area leaving the other inside. Door won't open. It can tell the difference between inside and out.
