Best Tires to Replace the RF
I'm about ready to replace my original run-flat tires - 35K. I would prefer more of a performance tire (especially since I'm adding the Dinan performance upgrade later this month)
I own the 35i M-Sport - would love to hear recommendations from those of you who have swapped-out your RF tires. thanks, |

DWS's are EOL, the new DWS06 should hit stores in May. I'd go with the Pilot Sport A/S 3's if you're purchasing now.

I had DWS before, the quality control isn't good. They were out of round, giving a slight vibration at highway speed. One of my friend bought DWS had the same issue. (maybe we bought the same bad batch)
Also DWS is pretty soft, so handling is so so. I switched to Michellin MXM4 later and felt like it is a better tire all around except for snow performance. But even though MXM4 handled better than DWS, i still think it is a bit soft for X3's sportiness. I thought Pilot Sport A/S maybe a good fit for X3 but they don't seem to offer the right size. |

I'm not sure why this board likes A/S rubber so much. I can only imagine them being useful in a place where it snows often in the winter, but never with any real accumulation or icy conditions. If you live somewhere with a warm climate, wouldn't you want summers all year round? You can get performance tires that aren't super aggressive and don't wear out overly quickly, and they dramatically improve the feel of any vehicle. If you live somewhere that snow is prevalent and accumulates in the winter, you really should invest in good snows. I live in a place like this (Toronto, Canada) and snow tires have provided safe commutes while most people stay home during a winter storm. |

We put Bridgestone Potenza RE960AS Pole Position run flats on our X3 35i M Sport. We like them very much. They are 3rd gen RFTs and the OEM Goodyears are second gen. The Bridgestones are very quiet and the ride is improved.
We have about 5k miles on them now. |

Older Hondas used Pilot HX? MXM4 and it is a cheap OEM tire that seem to get very bad reviews. The MXM4 you can order from tire rack is the Primacy MXM4, that's their (non-sport) top of the line tire... Not sure why they used MXM4 name, but it is not related to the older Pilot HX. |

I replaced the ls2s in the fall with pirelli sottozero 3 winters and am putting on pirelli p zeros in a few weeks for summer tires. Even the pirelli winters handled significantly better than the ls2s. I don't like all season tires they are really *no season tires

After talking at length with my BMW Dinan expert I decide to go with the Pirelli P Zeros Run Flats. These apparently are the 'standard' tires that come with the M Version. I understand I'm losing some performance in the Snow/ Ice but that's why I have my GL450 MB. I'm total this is a far superior performing tire vs. the 'stock' Goodyear LS2

In my view the UK weather would be ideal for them. A reasonable compromise for some drivers.
BMW do not recommend nor fit them in the UK. As you guys say in the US "Go figure". I am on holiday in the Dominican Republic at present and we have a Canadian friend who is a diplomat and they imported their X3 xDrive2.8i with RFT All Season Tyres. The temperatures range from a high of 90F to a low of 66F. Not much snow! I think they will have a problem if they try to replace one.

There bad batches of DWS and every tire.
My friend swears on the new Michelin Pilot A/S 3 but they wear so fast and bubble within the year thank god for his warranty (replaced them). I've had DWS on my 2006 RWD Cadillac STS for 2yrs and at that time the DWS were just out new and soldout nationwide. Found it on craigslist for good price 80% life and drove 1hr to get them off a guy in a Lexus. Gotta thank these tires so much because a RWD in teh SNOW? means a lot to me when you're able to drive to work and back home safely in NYC/NJ roads, traffic etc. I was debating on sticking with RFT but the options were limited that had good winter performance, unfortunately I'm 1 of those that doesn't have their own garage and can't have dedicated season tires. Found DWS again on craigslist for a great price and took off the cheapyear LS 2 (wow they were so bad with only 12k miles on them). DWS does have a soft sidewall but the way it held up in all the snow we got this year on my X3 this tire will take my vote yet again, being able to go through puddles of rain in the highway that magically appear and you can't avoid due to the middle lane crowded and slow. My ultimate respect to the DWS once again. 235/50-18 i had in my Caddy 245/45-19 squad on my X3 M-Sport. In my past bmw I had bridgestone potenza RE960AS 3G but it was like driving on rails, i cannot comment on snow testing since i didnt keep the car for long and cant remember how good it was in the rain at hwy speed. My suggestion is search these forums will take some days and read what is best for your area and what weather you will need it the most. In my case, Rain/Snow are more important than Dry because most can do fine in the Dry. I rather have a great Rain tire w/ Winter safety than the best summer tire since in my case there's more rainy days and the snow is you never know where you're going to be. BMW Dinan will recommend P-Zero because thats what they carry and will $$$$ profit from you buying it from them too. Tirerack has good reviews and a lot of users reviews too. At the end of the day everyone here lives in a different city or climate, follow the ones nearest you with more than 1 year of driving in those different climate too. Quote:

Thanks Captain, you're words hit home (we live in somewhat similar geographies - Bucks County, PA and likely had similar weather conditions this year - cold with good deal of snow.
Glad to hear you've had good experience with DWS tires and am really trying to avoid stock replacement (LS2). I understand Conti DWS06 are the high performance replacement for the DWS version and will begin showing up in the stores in May. I may be able to hold off until then but not sure they'll have the 245 R45 19s... we will see. |

Summer setup : Bridgestone S04 pole positions on 310M wheels (michelin pilot super sports weren't available but these are roughly equal)

My local BMW dealer conversation seemed to go very well. After indicating I did NOT want to switch summer/winter tires and wanted to stay with RF. The recommendation was either LS2, Pirelli P7 centurator (sp?) or the Michelin Primacy MXM4.. His recommendation leaned towards the MXM4 Primacy RF (he has a bias against Goodyear). I have to say, he even suggested that I buy from Tire Rack and have them sent to BMW since they're a approved tire mount company for Tire Rack.
So, has anyone who stayed with All Season RF, had experience with the Michelin Primacy MXM4 Tires for their X3 35i M-Sport? They have to be better than the LS2! |
