I agree, but if you do need to use it, you would want your insurance company to stand behind you no matter what. I would not consider an extended warranty policy that has the right to cancel you if you make too many claims.

Hi X Men - Wondering if you'd share if you purchased the extended warranty with either of the BMWs you drive, and if so was it the BMW factory warranty or did you go with a 3rd party? Also, how much was the X3 warranty if you did purchase it?

Thanks!

Have a 2011 X3 that is one month out of warranty (actually the car was idle for the month since we were away). Was interested in buying a 2 yr 24k BMW Gold or Platinum extended warranty but dealer says I am not eligible and is steering me towards a third party (CNA) warranty instead. Is he just trying to sell me a more expensive higher profit warranty or does anyone know if I can still qualify for BMW extended warranty? Vehicle has 29k miles in 4 years...do I really need an extended warranty? and, also, has anyone had experience with the CNA warranty?

My Canadian dealer says bmw warranty available any time before end of 4 yr warranty period. Logical as issues covered within that period, extended warranty/ew is based on same terms. 4yrs plus a day will preclude purchasing a bmw ew, perhaps on belief that one who has known issues would surely try to buy. Thus this BMW policy either increases their profits or lowers premiums that they charge. So after initial warranty period, one is limited to 3rd party, so would it appear pricier as a high risk policy owner who has a known issue will make a claim.

I was shopping around for an extended warranty for my old 2012 5 series, BMW's MSRP was $3900 for a 7 year/70000 miles platinum warranty. I shopped around and found a dealer that was willing to go down to $3400. I also looked into fidelity and mercury warranties, talk to my SA at the dealership and he basically told me that how smoothly the claim process goes really depends on the adjuster assign to the case. They have to approve the repair and after the repair is done, they have 48 hours to inspect the repair and approve it. According to him, most of the time, this process goes smoothly but once a while, he does get angry customers that are not happy because the adjuster is holding things up. At the end, I decided to put aside $4000 and self insure the car.

Thanks X Mex - How many miles do you have on the X3 and how has it been from a reliability/repair perspective? I know that my X3's reliability could be much different than yours, but trying to get an idea of how often things go bad to decide if I go with the self-insure past the 50k, or Geico MBI or another extended warranty (BMW or 3rd party).

Do you have to buy ext warranty from the dealership you purchased your vehicle? I want a fair price but I guess I am not certain if I want to use the same dealership for my next BMW purchase.

My understanding is that if you want an "official" BMW manufacturer warranty, you can purchase it from any BMW dealership. Third party warranties can be purchased either through some dealerships or directly from the warranty company.

The X3 is my wife's car, she doesn't drive it much, only 20K miles. So far no major repair except for routine maintenance. If your car has a good reliability tracking record, I would consider self insuring. As you know, insurance companies always make money off extended warranty, the odds are on your side if you self insure.

Since we're waiting on the G01...

This will be the first time in a number of years we will keep a vehicle past its new car warranty date. Our 2012 X3 xDr35i will be out of warranty in less than 3 months, and since we want to wait on the G01 this time (whenever it will be released), we're thinking about purchasing the 6 year 70,000 mile 'Platinum' plan.

I downloaded the pdf from BMW which explains the plans. Am I to understand correctly, if one purchases the 'Platinum' extended warranty coverage you obtain the exact same coverage as we have under the original new car warranty?

I am thinking about extended warranty. Mine is 2014 X3 28i N20 engine with 30k miles. Will be out of warranty this coming May.

I have heard that timing chain is an issue, but it only seems to happen after 60k miles. If I get the longest warranty (6 years) from the dealer, it will not reach 60k in next 2 years. So it is not worth for this concern. I also have heard water plump is another issue, but does it happen on N20 engine or only happen on 6 cyclinders?

Does it worth to purchase?

And per GEICO today the MBI is $1075 for 7 years ($76.80/6 months or 153.60/yr).
IIRC BMW Canada doesn't have tiered coverage. All or nothing. I don't even think they provide deductible options.
Price vary on models.

You can typically negotiate for a few hundred off. It's straight up profit IMHO. But what does peace of mind mean to you?
