USA's low tow rating
Here's what I have so far. The Euro-spec tow rating (from magazine writeups) is 2400 Kg or 5280 lbs. The Aussie-spec (from their brochure) is 2200 Kg or 4840 lbs. The current American official rating is shown in the Trailer Life 2011 Tow Rating Guide at a pathetic 3000 lbs. The reason it's low is because it's an unbraked rating. According to our local dealer, BMW will announce a dealer-installed hitch around mid-April and give it a braked rating (i.e. trailer with its own brakes and brake controller in tow vehicle) at that point. Dealer's best guess is it will come in around 4400 lbs (which would match the Audi Q5). I'm hoping we get at least the Aussie rating. Anything less and I'll have to skip buying the X3. X5 (6000 lb tow rating) at $10k more isn't really a player at this point. Did a test drive with the turbo today. Everything else is great on the 2nd gen X3. Just gotta have a tow rating in the ballpark of other similiar-wheelbased SUVs like the Ford Explorer, Acura MDX, and Toyota Highlander. All those are rated 5000 lbs. Here's your wakeup call BMW! (to paraphrase Gordon Gecko in movie Wall Street)
